This is the area I seem to have the greatest problem with right now, I'm awful at making settings, I'm even more awful at setting stones, I'm ok with cabs and premade bezels but anything else and it all tends to go a bit wrong! It's non round stones that give me the biggest issue. For my C&G I set some faceted marquise stones, I just could not get the claw settings right so I made a kind of improvised collet/bearer setting with a short tube of sterling with bezel strip around the outside but even then I could not get the rub over flat (hopefully you get what I mean).

Anyways, yesterday I made a ring with a heart shaped rub over and that went a bit wrong too (the silver wasn't evenly around the stone, some was lower on the stone)... any suggestions firstly for the easiest way of setting the load of heart shaped faceted garnet I stupidly bought or generally for better setting, esspecially rub over?

Any help would be apprietiated.

Hi Ceri
The only thing I can think of is to use fine silver bezel strip (it's softer so you might be able to tuck it in easier) apologies if you already do I couldn't quite tell from the picture

Thanks, I did use fine silver... I used sterling for the seat of the stone (just below the girdle) and surrounded it with the bezel strip) I hope it's just a question of practice, I've only actually set around 20 stones and about half of them came out useless and the rest aare somewhere between awful and okish...I wish I had my course stuff back then I could put up more pictures.

No, I absolutely get your meaning... thank you! I've never set a square stone but with the marquise I was doing essentially the same thing but I used a ring of bezel strip and a smaller ring of solder (the rings were ovals though) this I think is the key to the messed up ends I was getting. Where there were messy fold type defects. Thanks so much... one more question though with the marquise do I cut V's in the ends?
Thanks so much again!
