Art Clay Silver (again)

Following my disastrous first attempts - when my tiny piece of artclay ended up looking like shortcrust pastry - I have just taken delivery of 3 x 7gm packs. Like I said, I will not be beaten!

I also got a new book, Art Clay Silver and Gold by Jackie Truty. This book is astounding! Okay, so it flogs Art Clay Silver for all its worth but the basic information is superb. It's a project based book and I usually turn my nose up at those - I don't want projects, I want knowledge - but this book comes up with both. It was here that I discovered why my first attempts were so buggered - I used too much oil (actually a rather expensive spray-on stuff specifically for the job) on my hands.

With that knowledge under my belt its onwards and upwards - but I'm a realist beneath my bull-headedness, which is why I bought three separate packs. The theory is I can only muck up one pack at a time :(|

fingers crossed for you Di, i will be very interested to hear how the next attempt goes, I am telling myself everyday that i mustnt buy any cos i have so much else to perfect before trying something else, but i dont know how long i can last :-s

I know where you're coming from Di ~ shortcrust pastry is a good description...I just looked at my last attempt as a piece of organic reticulation #-o

About 2 months ago I picked up the Jackie Truty book from a market stall and I thought it looked good, so bought 3 packs to play with ~ your post has reminded me about it so I'd better get my finger out ;)

Kym, I've just been looking at your site and thinking about how alike our tastes are - then I read you got the book and the three packs of clay (oh, and the shortcrust pastry).

I admire your confidence...I must go and find mine as it's gone AWOL on the art clay front. I've got a lot of orders to be done for this weekend (:)) but I'm going to set some time aside next week for an art clay day.

That is one of the reasons I prefer pmc to art clay silver. I have had less 'pastry' moments with pmc!! It is such a frustrating material all round...but I can't give it up! It encompasses everything I enjoy. I would love to have been a ceramicist but I haven't the room or the money to set up a ceramics studio....and I would have had to sell body parts to buy a kiln! But then I discovered pmc and thought I could mix my love of sculpting (and sugar flower making) with making silver jewellery...I would be in heaven!!! Hmmmmm.

I can't yet afford to risk large pieces of pmc so I have started small - making charm-like things from my own moulds - but even with that I get the front looking OK but the backside always looks naff... but then I can't afford to spend hours on the backs of little charms!... and I'm almost too embarassed to think of selling them! But I have to get some money back to buy more...

It's another £$**&^ addiction isn't it!! :'(

I spend my life slipping from one addiction/obsession to the next. The thing is, once I've perfected the technique I get bored. Don't think there's much chance of that with silver clay.
