Probably a daft question, but I'm not sure what saw blade I should be using - usually I pierce 1mm sheet. The grades confuse me

I am no expert but enjoy piercing. I have had success with vallorbe blades grade 2/0 Cookson item no.972 060. I have cut both sterling 1mm and fine sheet 1mm.

The cut in the attached pic has been filed on both the positive and the negative parts, when fresh cut the gap was much smaller.

piece is 5cm by 2.5cm

I use a 2/0 with 1mm sheet too. The theory is that 3 saw teeth should be in contact with the material at all times.

I think I am using a 4 for 1mm? although to be honest I am not aure as where I bought the from didn't label them and I got the 2.0 as well. I am using the bigger one so I guess 4.

I'd say a 4 was much too big for 1mm sheet. My most used blade sizes are 2/0, 4/0 and 6/0.

This might help though

According to that chart 4 is good for 1mm/18g. That's why I bought the 4 because I looked at that chart and it's working well for me :)

Have never used grade 4 but use 2 for most things. Looks like I was doing ok then - cheers for clearing it up. Cheers for the chart George, gonna print that out for my noticeboards at home and at work. Now if someone could give mean explaination on the numbers used in describing chain I'd be laughing!

There is actually a thread somewhere on here where chain sizes are described.

Found it:

Hi,
The first number represents the diameter of the wire, the second number is the number of links to the inch.
So 18/18 is made from 0.018" diameter wire and there are 18 links per inch.
Hope this helps.

Wow speedy response! Cheers George, that helps. I just buy what I know but it's good to know what these things actually mean :)
