This months vote was a tie between Plastic Deformation and Cold Connections.
So (as Plastic Deformation was on last months vote too) we'll have it as this months theme.
Cold connections will be now become next months :D
Don't forget though these themes remain open so it's not too late to add to any of the others (http://www.cooksongold.com/forum/show-off-your-jewellery-pieces-here/2282-theme-challenges.html) :)

So get out your hammering hammers and lets bash up some metal ;)

Those are lovely Nic. What sort of size is 'standard' for that kind of bangle? I'd like to have a go at making one in copper to start with.

Peter pretty please for our tutorial.

Sorry if I've had a blonde moment and missed it!

Nic, should have said, love the bangle in particular.

Ooh - I love, love the wide cuff. I hope hammering counts, or I won't have anything to contribute this month! :(

Petal: I'm really sorry I didn't measure it before starting but just measured it now & it's 7 inches
Sunnybank: Thank you! Couldn't agree more (looking for Peters tips too, lol)
Elliboo: Peters an expert and he said hammering counted :Y:

Being brand new here I'm not sure if this counts for the challenge. I made this last week. I call it "Gulf Moon". It is sort of bashed metal. I torture copper with little snippits of sterling silver (from my scrap dish)....I heat the copper with the bits of silver sitting on it..until the poor copper gives in and accepts the silver as its own. Its a little mean- but so far the copper has gotten over it and had no lasting repurcussions mentally.
I tube set the moon- which is a golden citrine and added a sterling tube for a bail.

I adore that bangle. I would love to make something like that but I'm concerned the selling price would be higher than the shops I sell in could manage. Also- I don't have any stakes :'(

Nice pendant :)
I don't have any stakes either sadly. I did lots of metal bashing at uni - it was fun!
Also I live in a terraced house now so i have to try and keep the hammering to a minimum!

Gorgeous bangle Nic and love the pendant Cathy!

I'm slightly confused though... what other things count as metal bashing other than hammering?
I started a ring on Fri but you're not seeing it till its done :)

Love the pendant Cathy, I haven't fused silver onto copper ......... yet!

MuranoSilver
30-03-2010, 08:53 PM
ooh that's cool! I haven't tried fusing silver to copper like this either :)

"Plastic deformation is a process is which enough stress is placed on metal or plastic to cause the object to bend. A deformation of this type is considered to be permanent in nature. Sometimes referred to simply as plasticity, this type of deformation can take be conducted under controlled circumstances as well as unintentionally. "

So I guess if it's bent into shape and stops there, then that counts...hmmmm wire wrapping
would be in there too then ;)

Yep, anything that deforms the metal permanently by using a 'sufficient' load (according to another definition). So I suppose the load in wire wrapping would be fingers or pliers.

Cathy - love that effect of the silver on the copper! Would go great with some of the foldforming I've done.

I don't think my previous piece fits the criteria of plastic deformation! Thanks for the explanation. Now I know what it means :X

Maybe this piece fits. The silver is soldered onto copper then hammered to texture and bend corners flush- then hammered to form a slight curve for the wrist. The links are bend- soldered - hammered and stamped as are the goofy irregular links. Lampwork cab and bead.

Would forging heavy wire be considered as plastic deformation? Made a piece yesterday using 10g sterling wire that is forged into a shape and curve (with cabs of lampwork dicro and mother of pearl)

Cathy that's really fun! Love the shape formed near the top RH side of the main link

I am probably too late to join this challenge...... could have added fold forged ring maybe?

Gemma
05-04-2010, 09:39 AM
You're not to late Lynne. These challenges are just for fun. We get a new one mid month but they never close so you can add anything anytime. Lets see your ring then :D

Here's some bits from me. The ring is 2mm round wire hammred and sweared at to make it look like that. It now sits proudly on my right thumb. The earrings are sheet hammered on to mesh to give them texture then shaped in doming block. I made them to sell but not sure if I can part with them!

Hello Lynne, I remember some of your rings from RAD! I love that foldformed one.

(P.S. this thread is supposed to be items made since 15 March - there is a new challenge suggested each month for people to have a go at - helps to keep the creative juices flowing.)

Gemma those earring are lovely - thanks for mentioning that you hammered the sheet onto the mesh, as I just assumed they were put through a rolling mill! That's a good alternative for someone who doesn't have a mill, for textures like that. :Y:

Gemma

Rolling mill= v. expensive. Steel mesh= free scrap from friend!! Not sure if you can hammer silver onto other materials to get texture but I'm gonna experiment!!

They're both fabulous but I especially love the texture you achieved with hammering onto the mesh. Yummy!
I think I'd keep them too :Y:
Lynne still love that fold formed ring!

not on my screen. The last post you made is #10.

Where the page numbers usually are (under the "reply" button and above the "Quick Navigation" button- is nothing. So the way it looks to me is there is one page only- and it goes to 10 posts.

I dunno about hammering it, but I did once put a semi dried ivy leaf through a mill on top of a sheet of silver, got a lovely imprint and made it into a keyring for my friend, who happens to be called Ivy!

I don't think I have got my copy yet grrr. I did these a few weeks ago. The first time I tried it I didn't anneal enough and they wouldn't open. I was afraid of heating them too much and fusing the sides together lol.

After hammering they are a crescent moon shape, and then I opened them, annealed etc, then twisted the top one way and the bottom the other way with my fingers.

... it must be difficult to get two pieces to match so well.

Yes! I did them together; cut both, hammered both, etc making sure they were the same at each stage, and they still aren't absolutely perfectly matched because they are 'made by hand' (lol, my excuse) :-D
