Hi

I am a newbie and am getting very confused with the diameters of wire gauges.

I have 2 books in front of me which have different measurements for the same gauge.

"Silver Wire Jewellery" by Irene From Petersen says that 18 gauge is 1.0 mm (AWG) or 1.2mm (SWG).

Two in one Manuals Jewellery by Madeline Coles says 18 gauge is between 1.219mm and 1.295mm B&S gauge.

As I need to order several metres of this just for one project can anyone offer advice as to which is correct please. The silver wire will be ordered from Cookies.

Hi Sonia, I am no expert but have found the Coles book to be a bit 'out' with its measurements, they don't tend to correspond with other reference books (though apart from that its a brill book for a newby like me!), so I would be tempted to go with the other book! :Y:

Ta - so does that mean I order 1mm wire from cookies?

It depends what it's for, what are you making? :)

necklaces / bracelets with wire joining the beads.

necklaces/bracelets made with "curly" links.

hope you get the idea - they are mostly from a book called Bead & wire art jewelry by J Marsha Michler

If it's an American book (and it looks like it from the spelling) then the wire is in AWG/B&S, so 18ga is (near as dammit) 1mm.

Hi

Thanks - it is an american book. I'll get the 1mm and assuming they turn out ok, put some pics up later.

Thanks for your help.

Sonia:)
