At last, I have a batch of them completed:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2688/4327429544_b78dcf2200.jpg

These are made to Michael Good's design from Metals Technic; dimensions of the small stakes are 185x40x13mm thick; the larger ones are 230x50x20mm thick for forming larger forms.

For those who are wondering what these are, take a look here (http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/articles/1999/dec99/1299mm2.html) - or for some more advanced forms, here (http://www.jennyedge.co.uk/).

I have 4 large and 2 small on offer; the large ones are £32.50 + £3 postage each, the smaller ones £25 + £2.50 postage. Obviously, I'll combine postage where needed.

They're ruffty-tuffty engineering plastic Nic - they don't need coddling, they need a good beating!

:D

Glad you like them.

Right, I'm out of these for the time being; I've had a few requests for some more, so I'll start on a new batch.

In the meantime, I'd love to see what people are making with them?

Hello Peter
Would be interested in buying one of your anticlastic stakes when they are ready.....are you putting them on here, or contacting people direct for orders? Can you advise which type of hammer is best to use as I have only used a metal sinusoidal stake with a cross-peen hammer in my jewellery class.
Look forward to hearing from you
Caroline

Actually, I do have another batch ready for sale - but I'm trying to get a tutorial finished on using them too. Dealing with animals with a self-destructive streak has put a crimp in things recently...!
I chop & change depending on size - for larger things like bangles I've been using either a conventional raising hammer or a nylon cross pein (that reminds me, I need to finish oiling the handles on them); for the smaller stuff I use either a bordering hammer or a modified chipping hammer. Basically, I try to match the curvature of the stake to the curvature of the hammer/mallet as much as possible.

Hi Peter - I'd be interested in buying one too. after you posted details of your last batch I bought myself a piece of delrin, plus the book with the pattern, but..... life's too short and delrin's too messy, so, yes, I'll give in and just buy one from you I think....

Looking forward to the tutorial too!

cheers

Great.....I look forward to them being ready for sale - the tutorial would be useful too!
Can you suggest which size would be best suited for bangles and rings - I was not sure if you can get a ring over the end of it like on a metal sinusoidal stake?
Thanks

OK, I've done a quick count and I have 13 small and 5 large ready to go.

One end of the small stakes fits rings OK; haven't done many rings as I've been mucking about with more open forms on the small stuff. The large ones are better suited to bangles and will handle 1" width easily.

Once I've sorted the handles on the mallets out, I'll stick them up on a separate thread - hoping to have time this weekend.

Hello Peter, I would like to order one of your anticlastic stakes, probably the small one. Can you do narrower bangles on the small one as well as rings or can you just do bangles on the large one.? I have just come accross you and haven't had time to look into it in detail as I didn't want to miss out on purchasing one.

I am new to this forum and not quite sure how it works in terms of payment etc.

I would be really greatful if you can save me one and let me know how to proceed.

Janet

Hi Peter will you please put my name down for a small one. Can you do narrow bangles on the small one? If not, please let me know if you have any large ones left? I definately want a small one if no large ones left!

Janet

ps_bond
05-07-2010, 12:54 PM
Hi Janet -

Yes, it's feasible to do narrower bangles on the smaller one; I probably wouldn't go wider than 20mm on the small stakes though - once you get up to that width, it's more comfortable to work on the large.

I received my small stake thanks, looks good!

I think I may need that tutorial though, would be great if you could do it !

No problem - I just need to finish the photos off (I think it was Shaun said doing video takes him twice as long as the job being filmed - I'm the same with stills!).

All the large stakes gone now, it'll be a while before I get some more done. The next slab of Delrin I have in that thickness is black, so... Limited edition? :D

It would appear that I am unable to sent PM's at the mo, so just confirming that it definitely is the anticlastic hammer.

omg do I need an anticlastic hammer as well?

Not really Jane - if you're using a Delrin stake, you can use a steel hammer (and you can get away with a Warrington or cross pein). For a metal stake, a nylon hammer is better - hence the lovely new mallets without horrid import duty!

Here's fine Kath - I guess I'll be making some more of the large up sooner than I intended (but please note - with the way things have been recently with self-harming animals, that doesn't really equate to any sane person's idea of "soon"!).

Hi Peter

I am in the process of making a bracelet, that was featured in Make Jewellery magazine last year, as my project in my jewellery making class. The above tool was mentioned and as I did not know where to get one I wrote to the deputy editor of the magazine who the forward me your thread on the Cookson's jewellery making forum.

From what I've read you seem to have made a few which was sold very quickly. Do you still make it? Hope so as I would love to purchase a large one. If not, do you know where I could get one to buy?.

I hope you can help

Kind regards
Marjorie

Tuesday night saw me cutting and profile grinding a batch of the large ones, so they're "ongoing" at the moment. *Maybe* towards the end of next week as it currently stands.

Failing that, there are some occasionally show up on EBay to a similar design; they are from the US (and more expensive overall).

HTH!

No problem - they're *nearly* done. Always the way where things get in the way of target deadlines... I'm down to final finishing only, and I really want to get them done tonight (so I can get onto the next thing - which is commissioning a small lathe).

Hi Marjorie - up at the top right of the page, there should be the word "Notifications" - hopefully, there's a 1 beside it; I sent you a message about the stakes last week. If you click on it, it should drop down a little box that tells you you have a message, you than click on the Inbox and so on. I'm happy to send it to your email address as well if that's easier?

Peter I'm interested in buying one of your stakes if you have any left, as I'd like to make some cuffs. I think you have some large currently for sale, what size of bangle would the large stake produce?

ps_bond
08-11-2010, 01:20 PM
I have... The cuff bracelets I've been making have been in the region of 1"-1.5" wide (er, 25-38mm ish); I don't think I'd go much over 1.5" wide with these - it would work, but it would be a bit awkward. Diameter isn't an issue!

ps_bond
10-05-2011, 12:30 PM

10-05-2011, 07:10 PM

Susie

ps_bond
10-05-2011, 07:37 PM
Not on this pass - although I do have the thinner plastic on hand for the next lot. I've still 4 small remaining. For larger bangles the bigger stakes are generally what you want, but as soon as you start getting into tighter anticlasts, the smaller ones continue the process.

Could you also please earmark one of each for me - ie. one large and one small?

Many thanks,

PS. I keep seeing refs. to PMing people, but have no idea what that is...

ps_bond
25-05-2011, 01:44 PM
Hi Elaine - no problem. PMs are Private Messages, and verbing the noun ends up with sending a private message being referred to as PMing... Under http://www.cooksongold.com/forum/usercp.php you'll find a link to your inbox on the left-hand side.

I'm a little slowed down at the moment due to being pinged off a silly horse on Friday, but I should have this batch completed sometime next week.

Hi Liz,

I expect Peter will answer as well, but I have the book 'Metals Technic', edited by Tim McCreight ISBN 0-9615984-3-3, which has a chapter with drawings on this.
All you need in addition is a vice, some hammers, ear plugs and reams of copper sheet for practice. Oh,and tolerant neighbours.

Regards, Dennis.

ps_bond
27-07-2011, 12:09 PM
Mostly it's the same answer :)

There's also Heikki Seppa's book on Form Emphasis for Metalsmiths (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Form-Emphasis-Metalsmiths-Heikki-Seppa/dp/0873382129/) that goes into some more detail on shape, quite advanced; Cynthia Eid & Betty Longhi are working on a new book on shell forming, not sure when it is out.

I wrote a thread a while ago on the basics of working with these - here (http://www.cooksongold.com/forum/tutorials-bench-tips-step-steps/3053-anticlastic-bracelet-bangle-tutorial-now-pictures.html).
