Hi everyone

I began silversmithing about...mmm... 2 weeks ago and have not a clue what I'm doing yet, but I love it. I'm starting an evening class later this week and I can't wait. Here are my first attempts. I don't have the right tools for setting stones so have been using the end of a teaspoon, and it's all a bit of a mess. They might be amateurish but I'm so chuffed with myself that I just have to share. I hope these photos work.....

Not bad for two weeks effort! :D The Labradorite(?) ring looks interesting, how did you set the stone?

Hi - thanks everyone. I've just noticed the welcome thread up top. probably should have introduced myself there instead of wading here showing off my stuff.

I'm from Edinburgh. I've wanted to learn silversmithing for years, but until now haven't had the space or the money. My husband bought me some tools and soldering equipment for christmas, and so I have no excuse any more. 'm so excited to actually be doing this, but I want to know it all now!!!!

I was hoping nobody would ask how I set the labradorite in the ring. It was the first thing I made, so bear in mind that I'd only been doing this for approximately 1 hour at the time. My secret? araldite. oh yes. I was checking the setting for size, and although I used dental floss in the hope that the stone wouldn't get stuck, it did, and so I had to prise the stone out of the setting thereby making an attractive rustic frayed looking collet.:">

Haha I've had one or two of those situations too. Your soldering (or fusing?) looks good.

Put your circles earring in the Challenge Thread - well, it looks like a flower :Y: !!

I had my first evening class the other day. It's going to be good I think. There are only 5 of us and it lasts 3 hours. There's so much equipment. It's made me realise that I need a bigger torch, and that my life won't be complete without a barrel polisher. sigh.... this is going to become expensive.

It is horribly expensive - so are all the bits and a lot of them you can only get from Rio Grande in the USA. I've got an hydraulic press that I got on eBay and I've been playing with that. I want to try making Delrin "pushers" to use with it (when I've got all my marking out of the way!). Given a Lottery win I think it could be good fun.
