View Full Version : Setting agate slices

Hello,

I bought some lovely agate slices at Bristol's museum yesterday and would like to turn them into pendants or maybe a brooch.

The agate slices don't have any holes in them and are just flat slices with an (extremely) uneven shape. But they have lovely edges, and this poses my problem: I don't want to bezel set them as then these nice edges would be covered by the silver bezel setting.

Can anyone else think of a way of setting them? Maybe some sort of claw setting? I'd really appreciate some ideas, please!

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob
If you do a google image search for "agate slice pendant" it will come up with some images that will give you some inspiration. :D
Here's a few I found (http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&rlz=1R2GGIT_en&um=1&q=agate+slice+pendant&sa=N&start=54&ndsp=18)
A lot of the claw ones look a bit messy but the bezel sets must take ages, the wire wrapped ones look good - not sure how secure they'd be though.
Hope you find what you're looking for & I'd love to see the finished results :)

I'd say wire wrapping- or drill some holes in them!

Thanks - I'd not thought of wire wrapping, but that's not really the look I was going for.

I do like the look of this claw-set one though: http://www.ross-simons.com/images/469294c.jpg. This is the sort of thing that I am thinking of. Thanks Nic!

I made some agate slice pendants last year , I made a wirework frame with 1.2mm round wire consisting of various swirls soldered together , leaving six ends loose, I hammered it flat so that it was flush with the slice then I used the spare ends to create a reverse claw setting so that the claws were not a main feature, merely a device to secure the slice to the decorative framework.

I have described this terribly for which I apologise, sorry no pics either !!
