View Full Version : The locket

I've finally made the locket. I tried soldering hinges onto it but they were so tiny that I ended up in a right mess. I've got to re-do the bail as it doesn't quite hang right but apart from that it's more or less done. Not sure it was worth all the effort though as it took me about 8 hours including making the dye for the hydraulic press. I suppose if I made it again I'd do it quicker. The cost of the silver and gold was quite expensive as well as it's quite large. Please let me know whether you think it was worth the effort as I'm charging quite a lot for it and I'm not sure whether the person will like it.

Ooh Carole it is fabulous!

Can we see a pic of the back? Is the back part smaller than the front? How is the bail attached? (sorry, so many questions)

I spent a good few hours on Ganoksin looKing at the pendant tutorial and watching Luis Moreno's hinge video tutorials for different perspectives. I can see HOW things are done, but it's just taking that step and having a go at it, like you have. Well done!

Carole its very beautiful and looks expensive so I shouldn't think there would be a problem with your charge. It was worth every minute of those 8 hours m'dear - an heirloom piece.

Thanks guys. The back is the same size as the front and is just hammered. The bail is just soldered onto the back part. I think I'm just disappointed that I couldn't manage the hinges. I'll have another go when I'm not under so much pressure.

I love it - the gold on the silver looks so good.

Congratulations to you - even if you'd rather have the hinges involved, I think it's perfect as it is.

It looks nice and chunky, and massive things warrant a good price tag.

I wanted to see a picture of the hydraulic press after you had dyed it, but perhaps I'll have to come to over Cambourne to see the colour.

I took the locket apart again yesterday and changed the bail. It's looking (and hanging) better now. Still wish I could have done a hinge though.

The thing is you get so caught up agreeing with all the comments when there is a long thread that you forget you haven't actually posted! I try to follow everything that is posted each day - but with my computer playing up so much I am missing loads of stuff!:'(

When I get my computer 'seen to' I have to send it away - which means I'll be without it for a week, and I don't want to do that yet! I might have to 'unplug' around Christmas though!

I really do think your work is stunning Carole...and I'm glad I am forgiven!!:X

Only joking Barbara! :X

I was so pleased today as when I was at a craft fair, a girl came along by chance and introduced herself to me as the person who had ordered the locket. She had with her a lovely card which she was going to post to me, saying how delighted she was with it. Phew, I needn't have worried after all!

That's great news Carole. And I bet she was delighted with the different way that it opened. Perhaps that added to its charm for her. I'm not surprised she loved it.
