Here are some pics of a ring I was asked to make for someone. It is going to be a very large ring. It is far from finished and I will post pics as I progress.

The ring as you see it here does not go on the finger. The whole thing is going to be mounted on the front of a wide band. Its going to have a secret compartment inside and some chunky stones set on the front of the ring and the back of the band. The ring shown in the pics is free from the inner bit and will be able to spin around the shaft.

I will indeed keep the forum updated to the progress.

Um. If not on a finger, then where is it worn? Nice work there.

The finished piece is a ring to go on the finger, but the ring in the picture goes around the shaft as shown in the picture also. The whole thing will be mounted onto a thick silver band, which will be the ring that goes around the finger. Its hard to explain. You will see when it is finished.

Filament
23-11-2009, 09:16 AM
I always mill a hole clean through the silver and then solder the collet into the band, doing it this way stops the tube from sticking out quite a large amount.

The tubes are the length I intended. It is an eight pointed chaos star.

Thats a good idea for future though if I need shorter tube settings. Thanks.

This is the piece I was looking to add a lid to using a screw thread, but it might be too difficult to do.

Even more intriguing is what on earth is going to be kept in the secret compartment? Daniella Westbrook's secret brand of nose candy?:-D

It will contain what ever you want it to Jason. I always liked the concept of the poison ring and I thought it would be good to include that in this ring.

A couple more hours work done on the chaos ring. The top fits very snugly into the compartment. The chaos star spins freely around the shaft.

My tutor at college always taught us to heat the whole piece. When I started soldering stuff at home I kinda thought......wtf! She's not here, I'll do what I like......
I learnt that this resulted in some blackened, unsoldered joints and some messy barely soldered joints......gone back to heating the whole piece.

Hi
Can you confirm following my tip that you used pins to hold the work insitu(which you did so successfully) that you used one grade of solder and went for the whole hit?

I can confirm that I used pins to hold the piece in place on the soldering block and that I soldered all of the 8 settings in one go with hard solder. I was careful to heat the whole piece evenly and all the solder flashed at the same time. I will add though that one of the settings moved away from the ring and I had to do it separately at the end, which was worrying, but it turned out good in the end.

What I like about this forum is that advice can be offered, but doesn't have to be taken.

What I don't like about this forum is unhelpful, negative attitudes, with people having a crack at each other. There are enough problems in this world, without people wanting to create more here.

We do enjoy some healthy debates, but we don't all have to agree with each other.

We have a friendly, helpful forum, where newbies & professionals can learn and share lots of useful information and we can all help each other. Politely.

Lets keep it that way! [[]]

The auction thing was a question and the wine thing a joke. Somehow I seem to remember a lot more risque posts on this site which have been ignored.

Minnie, I just wanted to say something about this bit - thing is, you're relatively new here and I at least don't feel that I know you very well. The jokes you've seen are probably between people who've been chatting for a while, so they know how the other will take it. Also, I seem to recall that you don't like using smileys? That's absolutely fine, but in a case like this it removes another way to suggest tone. Your posts tend to read very flat to me, so it's very hard to tell if you're joking.

(TBF, I don't think the wine line would have read well even with a smiley, but y'know!)

Ebay... eh. I'd never think that Jason would sell there, but I also didn't see it as an insult, because some people *do* sell quality items there at decent prices - provided you get the word out to your target market, I don't see it as making much difference ;)

ETA: Sorry Filament! I posted just before yours.

It would seem everyone was a little tired and upset last night when I was tucked up in bed. It all kicked off. And here was me thinking everyone on here was nice and polite. Fighting on my post? Make your own post if you all want to argue, don't hijack mine. I thought when I logged in this morning that I had 3 pages of feedback for my piece. Oh well.

Then again, The piece is a CHAOS RING. It has created CHAOS here. It would seem you're all under the spell ;)

Ah, I'm sorry that things turned out like that. I guess that the challenge of your complicated soldering conundrum fired some artistic temperaments!! Maybe it's part of the territory ;)
Maybe we need a new category on the forum called 'Fight Club'. When things start getting heated on a thread the moderator can step in with the message 'this section of the thread has been moved to the Fight Club'........just a thought......

I wanted to put a screw thread on it but it was too difficult for me. I thought about a catch but it would be in the way, because the outer ring freely spins around the inner shaft. So I have opted for a friction fitting. It is a nice tight fit and takes some pulling to remove it, so it is very secure. Wasn't sure wether a friction setting would work, but I tried it and I am very happy with it.

How big is it, I was thinking it was huuuge, but I always think jewellery is bigger than it actually is from photos..

It is huge. Its not for everyone. Its more of an art piece than an everyday wear piece.

Check out where I got the idea from:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2661/4098321889_abf4ee6f7d.jpg

This is a design from The Justified Sinner (http://www.flickr.com/photos/the_justified_sinner/) on Flickr although his is not a chaos ring and doesn't have a secret compartment. His is made from Steel and silver, mine is just silver. I just liked the way the outer ring resembled the chaos star so I adapted it into my design.

Thats why I didn't make the inner bit of the lid a full tube. You can then bend/shape the metal to suit. I will probably not polish the inners to much anyway.

When I was trying to source a large moonstone I rang my supplier and asked for a 22mm moonstone. They told me a large clear moonstone would be 100's of pounds, but they had some with inclusions for 12 quid. I opted for the 12 quid one. I am so pleased i did as the light play is amazing, because of the inclusions. Its like a nice opal.
