View Full Version : My Son, The Businessman!

Well, what a shock i had last night.

My middles son, Kurt, whose room i have taken over, popped in last night having just been to see some clients in Peterborough, with a business proposition.

Apart from having set up his own light hire and Dj company with the most amazing range of lights and lazers etc (Komumoo Productions (http://www.komumoo.com)) he has also started to work for his girlfriends mother full-time .

He has been helping her for about a year at odd times as she runs 3 mailorder lingerie companies (even supplies some Ann Summers stores lol, but its not all "that" kind of lingerie, they do the classy stuff too) and is bloody successful, and she was approached by another firm, several times asking if she would buy them out as they couldnt cope. She declined them until a couple of months ago, when Kurt had been out of work for a few months and his searches just werent getting anywhere. They discussed him managing this new company - doing all the repping and distribution etc and decided it was a good idea. So she bought the company and started to fully train him.

They were discussing their range and some of their clients like to also stock jewellery. Kurt kept saying that they had been checking out supposedly good quality jewellery and decided mine was better, and more unique as it was handcrafted, making it a good selling angle! So he has asked me if i was willing to let him show my jewellery on their websites (they get thousands of hits a day) let him have some samples to take with him when he is on the road, and let them take them all to the big london show that they are having a stand at representing all the companies.

I could not believe the business knowledge that he was coming out with, talking about insurance and seasonal collections and colours and marketing etc. He would mark the jewellery at a far higher price than i would dare charge as their clients are very afflluent, and he said i was underselling myself, now that he has looked at a lot of stuff.

I have to produce a portfolio for him to take with him to clients and really pull my finger out now to up my stock, and organise hallmarking and packaging.
Its all exposure for me as far as i can see in an already established market, and as its Kurt i would be working with, i can completely trust him not to rip me off, and in fact his "commision" is negligible but he wants to extend his range and meet his clients criteria and at the same time, and he knows that selling is my biggest fear, so it means he can help me too hopefully.

If this works it will give me a strong outlet where i can stay happily in the background, which would suit me down to the ground lol.

So we shall see, its all very early stages and they were just preliminary talks last night, just to see if i was interested in giving it a go, and there will be lots of meeting to come, but i am so pleased that he wants to try to help and that i will hopefully, be working with him. And, perhaps, i can help his sales too :)

Even if nothing happens I am so proud of him for the way he has taken this opportunity by the horns. It has given his some stress issues, and in fact ended up at the doctors as he had been hyperventilating for two days because its a lot for a dyslexic and dyspraxic lad to face, but he is not shying from it, he is quite determined it seems to become as successful as his girlfriends mum, and they are helping him all the way.

I think my boy is becomming a man :)

Lol ty hun, it might not happen yet, but if i can produce enough stuff without affecting quality, and the clients want it (which is totally out of my control) then it would certainly be the answer for me.

Gotta see what the prices are for the base units in the morning so that the worktop pete says he has at work can be mounted and then i can work with better light and without carting everything to different rooms etc. Even Pete seemed impressed with what i told him Kurt had said, athough of course he did get his dig in about not being able to be on the computer as much lol

Oh, that was lovely to read! I am so happy for you both.:Y: It is a really strange moment when you realise that your little baby has really taken a hold on life for himself isn't it? I have had a double whammy with my sons this year and have to accept that they are both now formidable and strong men!! They still come back for a cuddle from mum tho - so that's alright!! A special thumbs up on the dyslexia front...there is no doubt about it - when these unusually gifted people make a decision to get something done they really go for it!! Congrats all round!![]

Yep he turns 18 at the beginning of December, and his gift from Jackie (his "mother in law") will be a sat nav to help him go to these places for repping, as he will be going all over the country, and she wont be chaparoning him for long. I am truely praying that his enthusiasm doesnt waver as he could really make a good living from this.

erm...... i don't think so, he was looking at my onyx and silver ball set and telling which lingerie set it would go with as Onyx is mentioned in its title etc, so i think i am safe to carry on with "normal" stuff lol

You must be so proud of him. They can really surprise you when they grow up can't they, I still think of my two as my kids even though the youngest is 39 now!

Your lad sounds tremendous though (his girlfriend's mum sounds quite a lady too - how great to put that much faith in a young man). The very best of luck to him in his new venture (and to you too with your jewellery side of things!)

Ty hun, yeah my babies arent babies anymore but that has its own rewards too. My youngest is 15 on sunday and still demands the same caterpiller birthday cake that he has had since he was small lol - a family tradition now lol, along with the birthday tea, which basically means heaps of the stuff i dont normally have in the cupboards, all their favourite treats lol.

Jackie is indeed quite a woman, very strong and not someone you mess with, she will certainly keep him on his toes lol, but he needs that as he can be very laxy (like his mum). But they accepted him as one of their own and he has lived with them for a good few months now, and knowing where they live, i am not surprised he prefers it there lol. But he always brightens my place when he walks in the door :D

lol ty hun, yes i know this place is bad for business lol, and i have to get far more disciplined. Not that i am gonna get much done today even tho its my day off to work on my jewellery.

I have to drop my mother to her friends, then go to the nearest DY store and see how much the base units are gonna cost me to have the bench put up, then off to Hastings to buy my sons birthday present, then over to Rye for 11am to hopefully pick up the MOT from our garage on my sons car, that Petes hoping he can get done at 10 this morning, then into Rye town centre to tax it, cos its going to a show next weekend hopefully. Then i can come home and start on MY work, so gonna be midday before i even begin :( So much i wanted to do today too, never mind i will just have to do as much as I can before the light fades, and then coninue it tomorrow, in between playing taxi. Being Kits birthday this weekend there are cgonna be a lot of interruptions :(

Well i have the first official meeting with Kurts boss, on Friday 20th.

I was going to cancel at first when i realised what the date was, - it would have been Rikkis 23rd birthday, but i decided that a) i wanted to see Kurt that day, as i know it ffects him the same as us, and b) it might be nice to have something positive associated with that date, assuming that she doesnt blind me with business know how and terms and conditions that wrap me up in knots lol

So i have a week to go to try to get some reasonable photos organised but i fear i am gonna fail, i really need a camera with a good macro but i am not gonna be able to convince pete about that one :(

I think Kurts gf has a good one so maybe i can do better with that. I will put mine onto my laptop tomorrow and have a look at them.

This time next week i will be a bag of nerves lol:snow:

Su'

You are gonna be fine :)
Your jewellery is great and that is the thing that they are interested in.
Dress to impress 'cos you'll feel more confident.
Borrow your Son's gf's camera & if you're still not happy with the photos give them a pep on photoshop or picasa.
If they say anything that you don't understand then ask them what they mean - you are going in as the jewellery expert not the lingerie business expert and you don't have to know everything.
If they want an answer to something that you're not sure about it's perfectly professional to tell them that you'll get back to them about it.
You're a great jewellery designer Su' and that's all they want ;)
Oh, and you'd better B****y enjoy it cos the rest of us would give our eye teeth for an opportunity like this :)
