Hi

I thought I'd stop by and say hello.

I'm yet another newbie but am totally new to everything to do with anything creative including jewellery making!! So this is a very new venture for me.

I've spent years working in sales and studying psychology and now have decided enough is enough - shame I didn't think this a few years ago. Psychology makes me analyse too much so I decided to learn something creative to stop the over analysing and steer my life into a new direction.

I'm unable to attend a night school at the moment due to work commitments (although I plan to sort that out asap!) so I have to teach myself via books and hopefully this forum - what a good idea!

I look forward to speaking with you all and swapping tips - I can't supply tips on jewellery making but I can on sales and marketing so I have some uses!

Michelle

P.s Does anybody know of any books or advice on how to make chains - or even why this info doesnt seem to be in beginners books, is it too complicated for a beginner? I thought it would be a good way to practise some of the skills ...

Hi and welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't answer your question about making chains, but I'm sure someone on here can.

Hi Michelle and welcome to the forum.

As I'm not an expert of chains I'll leave that to others here, in terms of good books why not take a look at the thread in Jewellery Hints and Tips category, that should give you something to start with. You'll be surprised how much you can learn just by reading the threads, there are so many talented people here you're sure to find something you want to try. :Y:

Hi Everybody

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I didn't realise there was a specific term for making chains ('chain maillers')gee I've a lot to learn but I think it will keep me busy and interested for a long time.

Thanks for the suggestion for reading the threads - I intend to but I'm like a butterfly at the moment, keep being interested in everything and anything I think I need to focus - maybe reading the threads will help me work out where to start!!

In the meantime - I need to change jobs, quickly so I can afford to buy all the tools I'm going to need!!

Hi Michelle and welcome

You'll find that you learn an awful lot here. You'll also find that when you're in the company of like minded people it all gets a bit addictive.

To start with I suggest you take a look at the sites of some of our members - everybody does something slightly different and it might give you an idea of which particular direction you want to go in at the moment; there are so many choices! Off the top of my head I suggest you take a look at these:

Nic (http://www.muranosilver.com/) (Murano) whose speciality is precious metal clay
George (http://www.designedbygeorge.co.uk/index.htm), who specialises in chain maille
Carole (http://www.caroleallenjewellery.co.uk), who does beautiful silver work and also makes the most amazing aluminium bangles

There are plenty of other amazing jewellery artists on the forum - theses were just those off the top of my head that I thought would give you a good variety to look at.

Somewhere around you will also find a thread about books in our libraries, take a peek in there and see what people are recommending.

Enjoy!

Hi Michelle:~:. I'm a bit of a chain maker - but to be a bit different I work in fine silver wire (and I'm just starting with Argentium silver wire) I learned to fuse silver wire to make chains in the Fusing Silver Wire book by Liz Smith. I have a few chain books if you want to have a look at this link it shows what I have on my jewellery bookshelf http://www.cooksongold.com/forum/1030-post1.html. There are two styles represented here ...the loop in loop book and the Waszek are the more serious with most of the links soldered and shaped...but the making wire jewellery one is more of a decorative style where the links are simply bent in a clever way so that they interlock without the need for soldering - which is great for a beginner to get dramatic looks easily. Another great resource for the true beginner with an open mind is here WigJig University - Free Jewelry Making Designs using Beads and Wire (http://www.wigjig.com/jewelry-tools/) Which is an enormous database of techniques for putting wire and bead jewellery together - without the use of a torch or smithing skills - so again a great way to get comfortable with wire techniques.

Hope some of this will help you for starters... And you being into psychology and marketing makes you a really great asset to the forum!!! Mind you - I think some of us are more in need of a psychiatrist!!!:o ..as you will discover if you think jewellery making will make you less analytical about your approach to things.... AAAAAAhhhahahahahahahah......AAAAAhhhhhhahahahahah hahahahahahaha:D

Hi Michelle and may I add my welcome to you :~:. I am reasonably new to jewellery, or to be true I am just taking it up again after an absence. I have found youtube to be a great place to give hints and there are alot of lessons in jewellery making of all types YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com) some good and some not so good but I have found it very helpful. It won't hurt to take a look, just type in on search and see what pops up :)

You made me smile over my morning coffee!!

Thank you for the advice on the books I'm going to check them out after I have finished work. I looked at your work and I do like the chains you make - I dont know why I'm so fascinated with chain making but I think I'm going to make a start there along with the PMC work - I did pottery lessons once and the techiques seem to be similar but on a smaller scale.

To be truthful, I'd say most psychologists need a psychologist after working and dealing with other people's problems - so I doubt I'd be much use :-D - I'm only joking I'm relatively sane and would be glad to help there is a lot of psychology behind sales as I'm sure you are aware. And I think I know what you mean about the analysing - but that's a good thing, keeps my mind ticking and stops me analysing myself for a change!!

I can't wait to get going (stupid work getting in the way!) I have got so many idea's but its frustrating because at the moment I need to practice and learn the basics before even knowing how to create my idea's.

Thanks again for the warm welcome - I think I'm going to like it around here.

Hi Michelle & welcome to the forum :~:
I think chain making is an excellent way to start jewellery making and it's the way that I first became interested. It's a good way to get to grips with soldering and sooooo satisfying :) Plus, you don't need that much in the way of tools to make a chain. I made my first one armed with no more than wire, knitting needle, saw & 2 pairs of flat nosed pliers - after a couple of hours I'd made a chunky little bracelet that I still wear! Good luck & looking forward to hearing about sales psychology!!

Hi Michelle, welcome to the forum.

As one of the saner members on here, I would have to warn you about being taken in by some of the others on here. I know for a fact that at least one of them has a dungeon - combine that with chains and before you know it you've been sold off to slave traders never to be heard of again! :)

Ha ha well that cheered me up after a long shift !!

Geti - I think I've got your number already I believe you are responsible for most things here - either that or everybody else seems to be blamers!!

Im tarting to sfeel right at home here along with all the other insane people - this is where you've all been hiding then!! Never mind jewellery making - you guys could keep me in business ;)

P.s I've just ordered some of the books mentioned and I will be reading all the other resources suggested on Wednesday when I finish my mammoth shift. I can't wait and if its not too appalling I might take a photo of my first piece of jewellery for you to all reminisce back to the days of your first pieces.

Sleep well everybody x
