the name is glen, been making jewellery for 15 years for retailers / manufacturers and recently packed it all in and said enuff and started my own workshop and business. I am based down in brighton. how you all doing?:~:

I learnt to make jewellery the hard way as an aprentice in the southern hemisphere earning about £8 a week, working a 6.5 day week without any colege or uni, and had to pretty much teach myself most of the stuff.

Hi Glen,

Nice to hear from you and I hope that your new venture goes brilliantly, I had a peek at your new studio/workshop and it looks fantastic.

Look forward to getting loads of tips from a jeweller with all your experience.

Waves to Glen.

I am in Tunny Wells/Tonbridge and both Su and I are pretty much beginners, under 6 months for the pair of us. :Y:

Prepare to have your brain picked.

Note to Glen ^^^^^ that one is by no means a beginner, he is way too good, and has taught himself so much and so well in so little time!! (waiting for my stone setting and casting lessons from hm in the new year :-D:cool:)

Hi Glen welcome to the Forum, your dungeon reminds me of the place i worked in when i was a jobbing jeweller in the cellar of a shop but mine was all painted silver and there was a very smelly watchmaker that worked down there aswell xx

thanks for the warm welcome all, spent most of my time working on my website which is launching soon only to realise I havent made anything :-" heh heh
I put everything aside until website is up, in a way the break has been good given me loads of inspiration again. Cant wait till I can spend time in the workshop, cant wait to get my brand going. Look forward to what you guys all think.

Thanks for the kind words about me dungeon. It did look good till I made a mess in it. Lost a diamond and refuse to vacume till I find it >__<

>> Emerald - yr silver workshop story reminds me of my first centralfugal cast when the ladies who prepared the plaster flask made the bottom too shallow and when I poured and released it sprayed the walls solid with silver - lol

>> Jayne / mizgeorge - not Peru but here is a hint, I was actually born in a place called the City of Gold believe it or not - hazard a guess?

>> snowimp - thank ya, madhouse sounds ideal place for a nutter like me

>> amazingbabe - will keep u updated thanks for the kind words.

>> Lisa / Jason / bustagasket >> thanks will continue to reap the forum and offer advice when I can, feel free to ask me anything u recon I could help with.

if anyone comes to Brighton give us a shout, our gallery is open for the Fringe Festival next year, feel free to drop by

I will ideally give ya all a link when I have some of me own stuff to show, inbetween so much atm that the midnight oil never runs out. Just taking everything slowly.

peace

Oh NOOOOOOOO!!!!!:'( That has always been my worst nightmare!! People keep saying that we should try setting stones...but I have a severe case of 'the dropsies'!!...how could I risk it!! Mind you - you sound a tad accident prone yourself!! ...silver plated walls - now THAT'S a new one on me!!

Welcome to the forum by the way....I seem to have missed that bit!:~:

Can't detect a Spanish accent in the writing - Glen isn't a typical South American name - I reckon somewhere on the Gold Coast of Australia - am I close? am I? am I? am I? huh? :Y:

Hi again all, very warm welcome was much apreciated, wish other forums were like this one. Most forums on the web are very unfriendly places.
I used to love writing poetry and used to post to forums all the time, writers just arent the same as jeweller makers I suppose.:)

Ok here is another clue.
The correct term for where I was born and learnt jewellery making is actually Place of Gold
It has produced almost half of the worlds gold (40%)
Almost all of the worlds platinum (90%)
The continent is renowned with diamond resources (among others)
And it is the birthplace of the worlds biggest and most famous diamond company.
There is a hole dug in the ground that is the worlds biggest man made diamond mine which is now a synonymous name with international diamond trade....
Sadly all this aside the continent is probably one of the worlds poorest and most troubled.

If you cant guess now, .... then , dunno, then I guess you lose heh heh..

Jo'burg :) Or, Egoli, to give it its African name.

So, that'll be Johannesburg then?

And writers aren't that much different, Glen - its how I earn my living ;)

Okay, I just googled it and wiki says it's the name of a SA soap opera. Were you born on set? That's pretty funky:Y:
btw, what do we win if we get it right? Can we look for the diamond in the dungeon?

glen

WOOT =D>
well done
egoli is a soap opera
Gauteng is a place (joburg) I have also been known to call it hell
Most people guess I am from new zealand or something cause my accent is so suppressed been in Uk for 11 years already.
No I am not a nazi racist I leave all that for the narrow minded fools in the world.

I am glad I was born and grew up where I did and especially because of the trade I chose, It is sad to see poverty in places rich with things like gold and diamonds etc, as Africa is but witnessing it and understanding it is a sad gift.
I hope to grow my company to help the international precious metal and stone trade and the communities involved. But that is a dream. I will take small steps to get there.

First we learn to crawl, then we learn to walk and then we can learn to run and jump and I love to bounce

Is Tiggers are wonderful chaps
They're loaded with vim and with vigor
They love to leap in your laps
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy pouncy

I lived in Togo for a while, Glen - so a long way from where you were but still dreadfully imbalanced in terms of the haves and have nots.

I was there as a croupier, working at the casino of the Hotel Sarakawa. We were housed in private villas and each had a personal maid - my maid's name was Veronica, although she insisted that I call her Sister Veronica. I am from humble beginnings myself and my mother has cleaned for other people; needless to say, this made me very uncomfortable. In silent protest, I washed my own underwear, only to find that Sister Veronica was mortified - it apparently reflected badly on her.

Just down the lane from my villa was a small 'lean-to' type affair. A corrugated tin roof supported by two wooden posts and backing onto a fence. It was home to five or so families. I used to pass by on my way to the bakers and invariably bought them a few loaves of bread. That went down very badly indeed with my casino owning employers. I was contracted for a year - I was home much, much quicker than that. I'm far from a political person but I couldn't stand the inequalities. :(

Hi Glen,

have you tried the old "tights over the end of your hoover attachment nozzle" trick to try and find your diamond?
