You just couldn't resist could you?

What's GETi been up to today then?

How to lose money on an order and turn it to your advantage.

This chess pawn paperweight was ordered by one on my customers recently. He originally had one cast from silver and we just finished it for him but this version is one that we machined from solid Stainless Steel bar - material cost £200 - tooling £60 - labour 3- 4 hours £200? - total £460 (plus all the other usual overheads rent, rates, leckie etc.)

How much are we getting for it? £200 - bargain! I haven't quite worked out the bit about turning the loss to our advantage but I think the secret Santa might come into it somewhere along the line :) I may also have to join a chess forum to see if I can flog a few to the enthusiasts out there - do you think they are ready for me? :~:

It's just one of those things - we made the silver one and the customer said "would it be cheaper in stainless steel, can you make me one?" and I said yes hoping something else more profitable might come from it - you never know, a nice big half carat diamond plonked on the top, a few platinum inlays and a bit of laser engraving and we should get at least a tenner for them, any takers? :Y:

Hiya Jason where've you been? They've all been ganging up on me in here :)

I quite fancy making a few bits for around the house in Silver.

I think the silver one weighed in around half a kilo - quite a lump!

Now Alan is a great photographer of his products, but click on the image, and it shows just why the pro's charge so much. You can clearly see the inside of the lightbox reflecting in the chess piece head. It looks like its a chess piece web cam lol!

It just shows how difficult it is, to photograph such a highly reflective (and brilliantly finnished) piece of art.

And so revealing the true beauty and quality of the finishing and machining :-"

I think the expression is 'half cut' and I can't believe Emerald drinks more than her weekly quota - mind you she does look a little sozzled in her picture - I think that is part of her charm :)

If I'd known you 5 years ago I could have supplied you with the lot ha ha. Mine have grown out of that now, but I too have trodden the path of making Darth Vaders out of black cardboard and Princess Leias out of white muslin (I drew the line at the gold bikini) ;)

...material cost £200...

I have one of two questions -

1) What on earth are you using that it cost you £200
a) What size is that anyway???

If you're paying £200 for bar ends of stainless, I've got some 1" D2 rod that I can sell you... :D

3 mtrs x 45mm diameter 316L Stainless steel

The pawn is 45 diameter x 70mm long (or 1-3/4" 2-3/4" long for all you pre- decimalites) :)

Quite a lump!

Strewth, is that what 316L is costing these days? And you bought the full bar, I see.
I'm in for a shock when my stocks of steel run down...

Quite a lump!

It is that.
