I made this background from a plan on the web.
Lit from above (2 x 200w tungsten bulbs bounced off a white ceiling) it gives a smooth background with no shadows - see my pic of the riveted shield pendant elsewhere in the forum.
All you need is MDF, a sheet of frosted glass, a tin of black paint and a curved sheet of grey plastic.

Do you have any bigger images Bigwol? I can't quite see what is behind the tub of needle files :)

that looks great, would be a huge improvement on my usual wait for good weather and take photos on the window sil technique, was it easy to put together ?

If you want to improvise something very inexpensively yourself, I have a tutorial on the light diffuser/reflector I use:
A free table top photographic studio lighting set up (http://www.boo.myzen.co.uk/lighting.html)
Goes with my tutorial on small item photography:
Taking photographs of hand made products to sell on-line (http://www.boo.myzen.co.uk/artisan.html)
Lots more photography tips in my blog - I think that's in my sig.

No - it was very straightforward, here's where I found it.
The Metal Arts Society of Southern California - MASSC (http://www.massconline.com/benchtricks.html)
The only change I made was to use glass, but frosted plastic would work just as well, and would be a bit safer - Glass is just easier to clean.
The grey background is made from the plastic front and back covers from a WH Smiths A3 sketchbook, but card would work fine.
All wood 3/4 inch (18mm) MDF cut by a local sawmill
(MDF is medium density fibreboard - a bit like chipboard but with a smooth surface.)
Parts list
Qty Desc Size
1 Base 12 inches by 18 inches
2 Sides 12 inches by 9 inches
1 Back 10.5 inches by 9 inches
1 Glass 12 inches by 9 inches (6mm frosted)
Glued and screwed, then painted black inside - glass separate
and just rests on top when in use.
