Those are lovely Nic - I'm very jealous of your lc stamps!

Out of curiousity, do you buy in blanks, or did you have them hallmarked before you started bashing?

lc is Lower Case Jayne :)

I buy them in 4 mm strips of sterling and cut them to length.
Then I send them off to the assay office and have them stamped.
That way I can make custom bangles whenever I want to :)

The main disadvantage of this method is you tend to get wastage
By pre-cutting the lengths you have to allow plenty of silver
The main advantage is it gets around minimum Hallmarking charge and
gives me a quicker turnaround

They're lovely Nic. What a good idea to get the strips of silver hallmarked first. Do you hammer them before hallmarking as well? When I make cuffs I always get them hallmarked in the middle so that I can chop off the ends if I need to make them smaller

Thanks Nic

You're welcome George :)

Carole - I hammer them after stamping (though quite carefully around the letters). Because most of mine have messages they get hallmarked about an inch in from the end. (I can still cut to length)

I send a lot of my work unfinished to the assay office, i just send the components with a wedge of solder and then when they have hallmarked it i work round the hallmark x

I didn't realise that you could do this. It makes sense - and it makes things easier too.

it sure does especially if you have delicate work cos they are just not very careful and especially near xmas when they employ a load of students, i used to send stuff and even if i had specified a place to stamp they wouldent, cussed lot but know for domes etc i just send in the blanks and then i can dome them with my hallmark on the outside ect x

Thanks all :)
Christine they are done using hand stamps...yes with practice folks can get good quite quickly! The lower case stamps I use were imported from beaducation in the US. The block letters are available from cooksons :)

Most folks start on larger (wider) pieces of metal like pendants as they're more forgiving of miss-alignment
