what's your favourite style of jewellery from history

Hi all - I have been in bed with cold all day, very frustrated not to have been able to work but have been lurking about on the forum in the hope of trying to soak up some knowledge at least! :-)

having read all the recent posts now ... and in case anyone else is twiddling their thumbs, I thought I would start a discussion topic - what is your favourite style of jewellery from history? do you have a favourite designer or a particular style? if you had to be a jeweller in another era, when or where would it be?!

for me, I love Art Deco but also viking and Egyptian - i am starting to collect books on the history of jewellery (they seem to be pretty specialist and expensive so I only have a couple) but every time I get a new one, that era becomes my new favourite!

I love to try to figure out how ancient goldsmiths made things with no flex shaft / microscope etc :-) and just learn about the lore and symbolism of it all.

anyway hopefully this topic appeals to someone and isn't just a weird rambling as a result of too much paracetamol 😆

Interesting topic Verena, from history I have an interest in Scottish, quite often incorporate it in my modern pieces, if you are interested in the way they did things in the past you may wish to have a look here https://www.youtube.com/c/Clickspring
while not Jewellery many of the tasks Chris does, incorporate very old techniques that were also used by early Gold/Silver smiths, making his own files is one example.

Wow Dennis those pieces are incredible! I love the flapper lady and the way you have mirrored the geometric shapes in the findings in the necklaces, they are beautifully designed and made :-)

I’d forgotten about your flapper Dennis, so simple yet striking. She reminds me of the costumes in the House of Elliot series which I found out were designed by a friend I went to ECA with in the 70s. Another daughter of a friend in Australia was involved in the making of the jewellery for the most recent Great Gatsby film which I should really get round to looking at!

My favourite used to be Art Nouveau especially the silversmithing , I did my thesis on both. I can look in awe at the craftsmanship of so many now I’m not sure I have a favourite

I love rene Laliques jewellery. Although he's known for his glass work; vases etc. His jewellery is exceptional. I also love Calder's work, I love the fact that he made jewellery purely for his own entertainment.
