I'd like to see more discounts for blonde haired jewellery makers in Market Deeping. :-D
Seriously though Silvergirl, as a business I'm sure Cooksons are as competitive as possible to students.
After all they (like most suppliers) value long term relationships with all their customers.

Asking for more can't hurt but Cookies already help your cause e.g. their popular student starter packs ;)

I feel obliged to state publicly that I resent your inference but I'll leave it at that for the sake of forum harmony.

Silver Girl, I honestly don't mean this maliciously, so I hope you will just take in what I am about to say with an open mind.

You seem to be very defensive and have a tendency to lash out at the responses that you are given on this forum. On the whole people have replied to you with reasonable and valid comments. Whilst people don't like criticism, it's a necessary evil really, especially if you want to start a business (as you have stated you do). For example, would you prefer to say, launch a website with bad blurry pictures and poor grammar and spelling and have us simply say "ooooh wonderful" when really we are only saying it so we we don't hurt your feelings or discourage you, when really it's not true? Or would you rather hear that these things need work from us, even though you might wish that wasn't the case but that way get the opportunity to improve these things so that you stand half a chance of getting some sales?

In your other thread, I honestly can't properly see your bracelet, and I could guarantee that it would never sell if photos like that were on a website. The advice you were given was good and Nic was only trying to help. The same goes for advice you have had on spelling and grammar in your business thread.

As it happens back on topic of this thread, I think if it were viable a small discount from students, say 5-10% is a not half bad idea.

I never understand what all the discounts for students are about, students have plenty of money... I've been there, done that. Its post grads who need the money and get no support. I live in a student area and get bombarded on a daily basis with student discount leaflets... where's the 'post grad trying to start a jewellery business, but in tons of debt discount leaflets'?;)

I've been there done that too, but some students had more than others. I got by OK, but making use of discounts where I could and working as much as I could. I would have been financially destitute otherwise! Also as someone planning on going back into education, I know I am going to seriously struggle. As a mature student with more bills and responsibilites as your average 18 year old going to Uni, the last thing you will be able to describe me as will be well off!

She isn't. Your response is to a very constructive and helpful post - and my personal suggestion would be to apologise for your behaviour. I can make a few other suggestions too, but I'd end up being less than civil about it.

Look, I, nor anyone else on this forum is trying to pick a fight with you. All people have done is express their own valid and reasonable opinions, and offer you advice. If you don't want to hear these opinions or advice given (which, quite frankly is only trying to help you with the things you are asking about) then maybe you shouldn't be asking the questions in the first place?! You will get useful honesty from the membrrs of this forum, even if it does seem critical at times, as that is what will help you the most, not comments on everything being perfect or that you are 100% right when that isn't the case!

I'll say it again, this is NOT meant with any malice as I'm sure the same goes for other posts that have bothered you, but you really need to be more open minded, honest with yourself and stop attacking forum members when you don't like what they have to say. People have only been trying to help you and there are some wonderfully generous and successful people whom you could learn a lot from if you are just willing to listen and accept you have room to improve.

I'm very sorry to hear about your Nan, maybe you shouldn't be worrying about anything to do with this forum right now if it is making you feel more upset!

Yes, whilst at the same time suggesting I was picking on you! Which I really was not. I honestly think Silver Girl that you need to accept that while not what you want to hear responses you have received on this forum are not meant as anything other than genuine help and advice, and stop being so defensive and accusational. I know it's begining to upset some of the other members, which isn't fair when they were just trying to be honest and helpful to you.

Ok well maybe you should just take some time out, deal with what's happened with your nan, and come back to us when you are feeling better and IF you are able to accept that we are a nice bunch really, that are willing to offer our opinions and advice, but it will be honest!

Also, I don't think your signature is going to make people happy, maybe you should change it ;)

Silver Girl was correct that we don't offer a direct student discount.
However this year we have a dedicated free student mini catalogue containing offers, discounts and competitions. Plus every year we support & sponsor a number of the UK jewellery universities & colleges courses.

We value our student business, and recognize they are the future for the UK jewellery industry, and do try to ensure we offer great low trade prices to all the students who buy from us. In addition we know that our knowledgebase, forum, blog and technical team are fantastic resources for those studying, and each year we always get great feedback from both colleges and individual students.

I now hope that the other issues discussed within this thread have come to a natural conclusion. I think there were a number of misunderstandings, and I now hope that all involved can start with a clean slate.

If anybody has any comments or wish to discuss anything further please do not hesitate to contact me and send me a PM.

Regards

Just a note on the student discount - if all you are interested in is student discount because it would at first "appear" to be cheaper, then Sutton Tools which is just a few doors down from Cookies does tend to offer 10% discount to students...but please note, I say "appear"! This does not necessarily make them cheaper to buy products from, and sometimes their lead times on products is longer too since they are not always in stock.

Also, if this helps as advice to students (particularly those based in the bham jewellery quarter or other equivalent areas in the UK), it is perhaps time consuming, but since you have many of the product suppliers on your doorstep, and many of them will let you buy on site, you should phone around/search their websites for the lowest pricing. That way you shouldn't need to have a student discount anywhere. The last point I'd make though is that I do tend to find that apart from a few items, Cooksons tends to have a better stock, and it's a hell of a lot easier, quicker, more reliable to get everything from one supplier in one order. Obviously this is not great if you do not live in the area, because of the postage fees.

I have actually just been checking for a few items and ordering it elsewhere compared to Cooksons would have cost me another £20 and even if I did then take into account a typical student discount of 10% the same items are still cheaper at Cooksons because their initial pricing was cheaper.

How's this for an idea, Cooksons loan us anything we ask for without charge, if it's brilliant and exactly what we need we get to keep it for free and if it's rubbish we just resign ourselves to the fact and get it free :D

No?

Just a thought :-"
