is 4 prong basket enough for 7mm stone

Hello, I've been learning jewelry making as a hobby and want to make a 9ct yellow gold ring with a faceted stone in a basket setting.

Will 4 prongs be able to safely hold a 7mm. Some people say that you should use 6 prongs when going above 6.5mm.

Also will it be easier to set a 6mm or 7mm stone. And is 9ct yellow gold more durable than 9ct white gold.

Hello nightone, and welcome to the forum.
You don't say what your ring is for, but if it is for daily use, then aim to make it as strong as possible.
The various 9ct golds are approximately equal in durability. Its just a question of colour preference.
The larger the stone, the stronger the claws will have to be. But thee is no increase in difficulty.

Please note that if you buy a ready made ring, it is often quite a challenge to adapt it to your chosen stone. The dimensions stated can be far from accurate.

This is why as jewellers we tend to make our own shanks and settings. It enables us to make claws of a suitable strength and number, and ensure that the stone will fit.

If you decide to go the ready made route, be prepared to check against a standard CZ first, before committing to your chosen stone. You will need some callipers. Dennis.

It will be an engagement ring and the basket will be one from cooksongold (9ct Yellow Gold Round Double Gallery Collet 7.0mm R4d70)

I was planning on bending a D shaped wire, soldering the basket to the shank and use a file on the basket to fit the stone. And then push the prongs over the stone
