Help with ring sizing please

Hiya all! I’m Noora and I’m totally new here ☺️

I’m also very new to silversmithing and would love some advice please.
What is the best way to determine the correct UK ring size if you have
the circumference of the finger? My friend gave me a circumference of
55mm which I thought would be size O. However the ring ended up being
way too big 🙈 I only then realised that different charts give a different
size for the same circumference, so what should I do to get the correct size?
Is there a magic chart that is the correct one?

Hi Noora, and welcome to the forum.
Sizing rings can be very frustrating unless you are very strict about it. Certainly trying work it out by measuring the circumference of a finger directly is a non starter.

It is best done with a set of ring sizers, and a ring stick by the same manufacturer to check the ring once made.
However wide the band is, its centre line should then coincide with the size mark you have chosen.

The the common make for this equipment in UK is Wheatsheaf, but if your budget does not allow for that, then consider the inexpensive option by
Cookson, of a plastic stick and plastic sizers to match.

I completely agree now that using the circumference isn't the best way at all. My friend didn't have a ring sizer and doesn't live close by so I thought this would work. But I have now learned that it is very tricky that way. Of course it might be me being inexperienced and doing something wrong as well :)

Well, post her the plastic sizer set (cost about £1.50), make sure you have a matching stick, and you'll have it perfect. Dennis.

..or if she has a favourite ring she could send it to you and you could work out the size by placing it on your ring mandrel.
