OK, I have a website. What do I do now?

You jump on the band-wagon and commission an all singing, all dancing website. Where are all those people that are going to bring you riches beyond your wildest dreams for minimal effort and how do you entice them onto your website?

The easiest way to promote your website is to leave it in the hands of a professional internet marketing expert.
Unfortunately this can be an expensive way forward and also a bit of a lottery as you also need to be careful who you choose to trust with working on your website. The wrong company, if they use unscrupulous methods, may end up getting your site banned by the major search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN, the right company can skyrocket you to the top of the pile.

The hard way involves a lot of time, hard work and frustration, but is also very rewarding when you see the fruits of your labour. These are the main points to work on:

Firstly - submit your site to as many search engines and free submission directories as you can. The reason being that you, more than likely, do not have anybody linking to you at this early stage. In the future, as your links grow, the submission process will not be necessary because the search engines will automatically find you through the complex maze of links that the internet is made up of.

Secondly, content, content, content and then more content.

Not just any old content though – good relevant content to the theme of your site is essential. The overall look of your site will attract people to it, but it is the good, well written content that makes them stay and eventually buy from you. Sites built entirely from ‘Flash’ are visually effective, but rarely contain the required amount of text to be taken seriously as a quality site by search engines. Also Flash and Javascript cannot be read by search engines so it is a very fine balancing act to make your site appealing and search engine friendly. It is the quality content of your site that search engines look and crave for that helps to increase your ranking with them and the constantly changing and added to content that makes them come back for another look more frequently.

Your site must provide information about your products and your company. The more information you provide about yourselves helps your potential customers to feel relaxed about you and feel confident about buying from you. People are still very wary about buying over the internet, they need to be reassured that you are a reputable company and not a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ type company that it is all too easy to find on the net.

Thirdly – SEO or search engine optimisation is a big part of the success of your website and your marketing mix.

Your choice and position of keywords and phrases, your domain name, outbound and internal links all have a part to play in the process. Learning about this isn’t difficult, but regularly utilising the services of a company that can analyse your website and produce a report for you to keep a check on the regularly changing algorithms of the major search engines can be an invaluable and inexpensive exercise.

Fourthly and perhaps most importantly – Link building.

As with content, it is extremely important to build up a steady increase in websites that link to you. In the good old days it was enough to approach a website owner and offer to link to them in exchange for a link back to your site. This is known as reciprocal linking and search engines now look on this as a false way to try and influence a websites popularity. The sites that link to you and the sites that you link to must be related to the theme of your website, so you must be very choosey in this department. Linking to unrelated sites or ‘bad neighbourhood’ sites can affect your ranking in a negative way, also, the speed at which links are added to your site can affect your position. Too many all in one go suggests that you are buying from companies that specialise in supplying links called ‘Link Farms’, a steady build up is much more credible to a search engine robot. Two of the most effective ways of building up single one-way links back to your website are to take part in forums and by writing and submitting articles to article submission sites.

By following these tips and combining them with your current ‘offline’ marketing and advertising methods will give you the results that you require. Welcome to the world of Internet Marketing.
