I like that idea too - Ganoksin/Orchid has a 'Bench Exchange' and it's great for the tool geeks to have a good snoop at eachothers workspaces, maybe it would need it's own category?

When we moved into our cottage I bagged the utility room as a workshop and stole the dishwasher space!
This is a picture of my bench about 2 years ago
http://www.muranosilver.com/images/workbench2.jpg
The solid wood worktop got a big semicircle cut into it for my bench peg
(neato idea as it is the perfect height)

This is my workshop today:
http://www.muranosilver.com/images/workbench09.jpg
Under the bench is my Propane and Oxygen Torch and to the right are my pickle pot, tumbler & storage area.
Opposite the metals bench is the desk where I do resin, polymer & precious metal clay work.
I like to keep them seperate to avoid cross-contamination.

Both benches look like they're in chaos - but everythings easily to hand

I love seeing other people studios! I shall have to get some pictures of mine before I move, though it's shamefully messy right now and I am off on holiday tomorrow, so I might be some time!

Agent-44, shamefully messy is good (makes me feel better about mine)
Charlotte - Love the peg board - really handy for quick access to tools

Thanks MuranoSilver, I spent a day doing a bit of woodwork, made a nice drill bit holder, and file holder, hopefully one day I'll have a shelf or be able to mount the peg board on the wall. Yours looks much more professional than mine. I'm looking to move to a house and have been mainly looking for a placve with a suitable garage, but the utility room is a fab idea! I spend all my time either in the workshop or kitchen so that would be perfect;)

Well, mine is my living room as we live in a 1 bedroomed flat (at the moment) so it's always a mess... alot of the time I work on a 4" strip on my desk in front of my PC but I do have a small table now.

I'm hoping to get my own workshop space when we move to a 2 bedroomed flat in Cornwall (with any luck sometime this century lol)

... and this is my wee table that someone had dumped in Sainsbury's car park at the Recycling centre!

Roll on the flat swap!

Charlotte - You made them yourself! Wow that's so cool & I hope you bag the Utility
all to yourself (and that there's a handy dishwasher space, lol)

Bijou - well done on saving a good solid table from the landfill site!
Regarding your workspace, as my Hubby always says.....
"It doesn't matter how big it is, it's what you do with it that counts" ;)

Hmmmm, I wonder....

At the moment I don't have a dedicated workspace as my stepdaughter has moved in (no problem) and we have moved the rooms around and I lost my workroom. Waiting for a huge conservatory to be started that I can blag a corner of.

Ominicci - Ever had a brilliant idea then forgot it before you could find your pen?? :p

Milomade - the plier holder is a neat idea - I use one of those bent plastic thingies
(got it from Cooksons) holds them all on the work top. Love your bright airy working space

Well becausae my worktop is so small I attached a piece of wire on the side to hang everything from. The work bench is from IKEA - it's a Bekvam kitchen trolley and was only about £30 - very sturdy and compact - good for me as I've got very little space.

Will probably change the whole layout of the studio one renovations on the house start as we're going to lay new flooring throughout the groud floor and put a wood burning stove in this room. So all the wallpaper will be coming off, all the skirting boards too, new electrics going in etc, so I'll have to use another room while all that's going on and then I'll have a blank canvas to work with, so hopefully will be able to get a nice big bit of solida wood and create a proper workbench. I can't wait - hoping to get it all done before winter.

You have all been busy posting today! I've been away at Art in Action - lots of lovely jewellery there!

I'd love to join in and post a photo - trouble is, I kind of do everything at my table - eat breakfast, check this forum :), sort the finances, both mine and my fiances bookkeeping, erm and make my jewellery. It alls gets a bit muddled and untidy!

I kind of have to tidy paperwork away to do jewellery and vice versa. When I'm in full jewellery making mode i will put a picture up - hopefully tomorrow as i have some materials arriving!

I use one of those clamp on bench pegs that i can take off when I'm not using it.

Anyway, i'll try get Ben to take a pic of me making something tomorrow.

My workshop is in the shed at the bottom of the garden, and it's NEVER this tidy!! Got a few recent purchases not in these pics, and am hoping to get my hands on a durston rolling mill to replace my jazzy old faithful! I've recently acquired a vintage watchmakers bench with hundreds of lovely little wooden drawers and a nice big dust cover, but that's a project for the summer because I'll have to pull this one out and put it on the other wall of the shed. Also got three more drawer units with loads of thin drawers - they're extremely handy for storing tools, which I have a rediculous amount of because my dad is a watchmaker and likes to give me things!! Great because I never really need to buy tools, but a nightmare when it comes to storing them in such a small space!

A few more close-ups. Can you see the scrawl next to the bench peg saying 'Keep Clear' followed by an expletive to myself - that's because I am probably the most untidy person you could ever meet and at the end of the day this area is piled high with tools.

LOOK AT ALL THAT STUFF you both have!!!

Wendy I LOVE that little thin drawer unit you have! What is that behind the soldering/firing tripod - it looks like a long thin rolling mill??

Barbara - everything looks so well stored. My perfect idea of a garden too; Crocosmia, an Acer (?) and those beautiful lilles! And small you say, even better!

Wendy - I now have "tool envy" do you know what it does to show a tool-aholic a well stocked shed like that!!! I will console myself with my less stocked, less organised utility room (sssh little room one day all that will be yours and I'll have little storage drawers too!!)
That tiny little anvil....does it come with shoemaking elves? ;) :p

Barbara - That gardens gorgeous what a fab place to work in. I take it the envelopes at the windows are to block the light for soldering? I have bits of paper blue tacked to mine :D

I have workshop envy....
I have tool envy....

making me think, though, about our current hideous shell covered [previous occupants taste not ours] outhouse/shed. It's small and built for midgets - you have to stoop or bang your head on the ceiling all the time.

It's built onto the back of the house and currently houses a load of furniture waiting for restoration and junk....I can see it as a mini workshop now though!

Ha - me too, soooo envious of all the goodies and organisation.

Here is where I work as promised, *hangs head in shame* its in kind of messy in between projects stage - might take another later for comparison... might be messier, might be tidier - who knows! Still haven't decided what to work on today...

How about that, eh. In its other life, my work desk was used for potting up our plants on it in the shed! The top has warped (its not used to being in the warm!), and is now in 3 pieces. So I've clamped a piece of mdf on top of the pieces, to stop losing any more beads into the holes.. ha ha

26

Behind is the other mini desk with more beads in the drawers and on top.

27

This is tidy for me. I can't tell you how long I've spent trying to put my piccie on here and I've finally done it - yipee. :D

Well Nic - the blue and white window is an old blue metal notice board and the white bits are plaster moulds I made for projects at college....(double duty as storage and insulation!!) they stop me from accidently cracking the window with stray heat from the torch!! The other one has 2 kiddie sun screens...the sort that you could put over car windows a few years ago....they roll up, so yes - they do help me to see where the flame ends and what colours everything is going!! But I can also roll them up to get an eyefull of my beautiful lillies!!

Lol at Nic and Barbara, I don't like the cold! I didn't know the cold affects gas, can't you get a little eco friendly electric heater? Or is that another hazard to add to the list of dangers involved with jewellery making?;) I need to get out of my carpeted guest room, I've only dropped one item before quenching and that left a nice little melted patch (I'm going to have to get creative to get my deposit back;))

Barbara - whats the fridge for?;)

Charlotte – If you like the idea of a shed workshop make sure you insulate it before you put ANYTHING inside, I didn’t and have regretted it ever since. I have terrible trouble keeping my tools dry in the winter due to condensation after I’ve been in there breathing all day! And it gets really really cold!! I’m hoping to insulate mine this summer.

Ominicci – The little white drawer units came from an opticians, I think they get them with lenses in or something and a friend said they were binning them – I think they’re classed as disposable! Quite strong and sturdy though. The long rolling mill actually has three rollers and is for putting curves in metal – a wonderful tool that allows me to make bangles by the dozen in minutes. You often see huge versions of this in metalworking factories, I bought mine from RDG Tools in Hebden Bridge, they’re a wonderful company if you use machinery/lathes etc.

Myke – if I had a laptop in the shed I would NEVER get anything done!! I’m the master of procrastination and way too easily distracted.

Nic – the anvil is so cute but the only little creatures that I ever see around it are dead moths and bugs! Another drawback to having a shed workshop I guess! It’s handy for hammering delicate bits of wirework. Tool envy is my forte as well, and hoarding I have to say!!

My cat would finish that mouse off in a second - no chance of me ever finding anything fluffy and alive in my workshop (the little killing machine that she is).

Well, here's mine at the moment. This is a testbench, so I'm messing with various bits of the bench itself as I go along. Still need to put in a skin or a drawer for sweeps though.

MuranoSilver
30-07-2009, 10:28 AM

Is that the one you made? It's very well laid out, ooops I can feel bench envy coming on :D

ps_bond
30-07-2009, 10:43 AM
It's just B&Q pine, nothing spectacular. The top is MDF & exterior ply (it was handy!) glued together - it's basically from the simple bench plans by Tim McCreight.

Layout is a bit cluttered - I've got a few projects sat there at the moment in amongst everything.

The successor will be made in a decent hardwood and "proper" joints for everything (and then I'll give my wee brother the castoff!).

Charlotte
30-07-2009, 10:59 AM
Wow thats awesome. I'd love to get in to making wooden furniture, just wish wood would bend a little, its such stubborn stuff;) How long did it take to make? Is wood expensive?

I lost my workshop a year ago when number one son came home. He's moving out again this weekend so I get my room back again :Y:

I also have a workbench in the garage where I used to do my woodturning and I'm trying to work out how to get it upstairs into the workroom. It may be that I have to have the garage and my old room back again.

Oh, and in the garden shed I have a whole host of other stuff, including a jig saw, pyrography equipment, and a slow cooker that I used for making natural dyes (from plants and stuff).

Today Devon, tomorrow the World. :V: Sadly, we don't seem to have a world domination smiley.

my workshop is my lap atm, then nip to the kiitchen to solder. I have a little glass table in the spare bedroom that i used for makeing my cards and decorating my candles, and the spare bed stores all my spare candles and stamps etc lol With boxes under the dest for paper and card etc

ps_bond
30-07-2009, 11:26 AM
I think I spent about £50 on wood for that - buying it from B&Q wasn't the cheapest option, a builders supply merchant would have been more sensible (would have taken me longer to deal with it though!). A couple of evenings work - there was more work went into relearning cutting dovetails for the drawers than any other part (didn't need to use dovetails, I just wanted to!).

These are the plans - http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/basic-bench.htm

Wood will bend - if it is steamed. Not tried it, but I'm told that it behaves quite well.

Oh, and as for the rest of the workshop? It's 5.5m across and octagonal in shape :D Left hand side is given over to metalwork (soldering goes on over there too), right hand side I'm decluttering to be able to do leatherwork on that side.

No photos at present. But my workshop is the Kitchen at present. I did have a workshop in a block of units but the owners didn't feel they were making enough and converted the units back to normal housing. Storage is a problem and that is normally in an empty house next door to us. Hopefully once 2 out of 3 kids have left home I can take over the spare room.

I've been hoping my son-and-heir might leave so I can nab his big bright room with a bay window overlooking the garden instead of the pokey box-room that I currently occupy as my office/workshop. I did try to suggest he might like to go to college away from London, but noooooooo the one he wanted meant it was cheaper to stay at home and he's still here #-o

That is pretty cool, I'm definitely going to have a go at that one day, benches are so expensive and I've always fancied seeing if I could manage a big piece of furniture. I always think its best to buy the tools and materials and possibly save a bit of money buy making it yourself than buying an overpriced piece which probably doesn't suit you needs 100% anyway.

I'm excited, I want to make one now!:o

It is also no fun having an old dining room table in your boudoir.

Di, Do I spy your OH using a screw driver to hammer a nail in???? And I thought you said he wasn't adventurous!!:-D

I hope you are really happy in your new little 'home' - I'm not sure if the colour scheme would boost my productivity or send me running screaming after a while!! But how lovely to have a whole room to yourself!! And with a radiator....and carpet!!

Di Sandland
16-08-2009, 05:20 PM
:) tis not as pink as it looks! Its sort of peppermint pink and green. As the rest of my home is a sort of beeswaxy sunny colour, it is a bit of a departure.

He never ever bangs in nails - regards that as wussy <:)-

The colour scheme was done for when the room was my office; when number one son came home it was supposed to be for a couple of months only so I wouldn't let him change it. I'm not sure if you can see it but there is a really kitsch ceiling light, bedecked with pink plastic roses - his conquests may well have looked at him a new light when they saw that

All hot work will be done downstairs in the garage (its integral so I won't have to brave the Devon rain) - that's the only downside of having a carpet!

I loathe book keeping! Do anything to avoid it, amazing the excuses that can be found!

Peter, yes used for sewing through upto 4 layers of vinyl coated fabric, it's a walking foot machine, been very useful and more than earned it's keep over the years. It gets used for about 4 days in a month on a small contract that will never get any bigger. If I could use it for 15 days a month I would give up my main business.

Where are you spying?
if you are looking at the thing in the cardboard box on the left then it is a circular saw....used for another niche business! I seem adept at finding little openings that will never get any bigger due to the market size, a shame as they have ondeful markup!

The flat lap gets used for stone grinding with a very coarse disc, after the stones are trimmed off as much as possible.

I know exactly how i want my work room layed out. the room is 12'6" square. A large 10 window east facing and a small 18" window south facing, door on the north wall and built in wardrobe on the west wall.
I am a devil for lots of little storage things, but when i do eventually get into kurts room i will house all my blank Candles (stacked on the floor first of all until i can convince pete to put some sturdy shelves in,) in the built in wardrobe and then on the top shelf i will have the embossing powders box plus the stamp pad box and stamp boxes. On the north wall he has two corner display units which will house my rapidly expanding book collection, one is currently in another corner but i will move it to behind the door, then there is a 5 draw chest of drawers which will house all the stuff for the sweetie bouquets and on top willl be a box for the silk flowers, and then there is a "tall boy" which i will stack all my boxes of card and paper for cardmaking, and on the top shelf all the peel offs and embellishments etc. The three drawers below will take the over flow of all the paper flowers, dies for the diecut machine, eyelet punch and all the indivdual punches. Plus a drawer for the tiara stuff.

On the opposite side of the room (the Workin wall as i call it and the east wall) i will move the glass corner desk in from the guest room where i normally make the cards and candles and store all my stuff - mainly all over the double bed lol, and on that is the computer, printer and the tools for my other crafts. I have a two draw filing cabiniet which sits next to it with the photo printer on it, and that is L-shaped so it will go half under the window facing south(the bit i sit at) and the computer table will take up 5' of the "Working" wall Then the rest of that wall will be devoted to my jewellery. I dont like the little jewellery tables i would rather have a long bench or table, i like space to move lol - i will have room for a 5' 4" length of whatever and it can go round the corner to the built in ward robe maybe. or i will have a freestanding storage unit of some description there.

It will be so nice to have a soldering area, assembling area and a place to put the tumber etc when i get it.

So there you have it. hope you can kinda work it out lol

I stick my vice on the edge of my daughters desk because it has a metal rim. It's one of those old fashioned school desks.

And I did some soldering in the kitchen recently, dropped the hot piece on the floor and I now have a lovely mark on my lino floor to remind me of my clumsiness!

But I have bought a cheap bench on ebay, and I'm waiting for the builder to clear his stuff from my garage so I can set it up. I wish he would just HURRY UP :(|

SO I finally tidied up my workshop/studio/home office/computer/mezzanine room thingy. It gets a bit hot, and I keep banging my head because the ceiling is so low, other than that it's a great space, especially for a flat! Doubles up as somewhere for friends to stay, note the bed cunningly disguised as a sofa ;) and I can take down the table with my photography stuff on and pull the curtains across to hide the usually much-more-messy workspace!

I think I shall miss it when I move, although I will get a bigger room to play in and will be getting a proper bench as a birthday present from my chap! :D :D :D

This is my home made bench which I've had for four years, it is made from two recycled school doors (mainly chipboard!) glued and screwed together, and then faced with pine planks. The shelf is made of smooth MDF so sweeping lemel is easy. More MDF is screwed to the back and two sides so that things don't roll off.

The peg in the centre is hardwood set into a notch in the doors and fastened with a large coach bolt, which is covered by a countersunk brass plate to make it look pretty (and to stop small parts and stones falling down the crack).

Other stuff - on the left - my bargain Record imp jeweller's vice (found on eBay for £20 - boxed greased and unused after 30 years!) ,

Rear left, a Morphy Richards Slow Cooker with pyrex jug containing sparex safety pickle floating in the water filled crock pot - works fine set to low heat.

Twin Chinese Anglepoise-look alikes providing good lighting.

Two vertical electrical conduit pipes fitted through both layers of the bench and secured using rawl bolts - with a Bracket on top to hold the Milbro Pendant Motor and flex shaft.

Right hand side, Heat resistant and charcoal blocks for soldering. and shelves for keeping doming blocks, mandrels etc.

ATM setting up my small business/ workshop in a shared artist studio gallery. When I first viewed the spaces they had I saw the cellar and it was nasty, very low celing, small and looked like a cave, it was no suprise that nobody was interested in renting it.
I am setting up my business on a low budget and thus the price was attractive. I had looked around at various office spaces where I knew my noise and mess wouldnt be welcome, the other option was renting a workshop on a farm but my gas torch wasnt much welcome there.

When I looked at the 'dungeon' as I call it :) I said to myself , I could put a workshop here... so I did. And I am happy there, and they managed to rent a space they thought would never get rented, and on an upside my company has very low overheads. It took 3 coats of paint to cover the cave and alot of plaster to cover the damp as best as poss. I love the enviorment of working with art all around me, we all have to start somewhere, some start with nothing, I started with a dream, hope and a prayer.

Hi Glen,

I know what you mean about dungeon workshops, I am currently setting up a workshop in an old Italian cantina, there was no other sensible place for it in the house and it was dingy and damp, but I've had the below ground level walls tanked and painted, and have managed to get some basic tools set up on the long stone bench that was used to store wine and I can now get some work done.

So I have basic tools out there which I was able to buy locally, but no soldering facilities and definitely nothing like tumblers or pendant drills ( I'll take the serious gear out there when we move for good) , but it does mean that I can get a lot of piercing, filing and hammering done.

OOh, how lovely retiring to Italy. Which part of that lovely country are you going to be moving to then ? parte degli italiani ancora? Don't start replying in Italian though, as I can't actually remember much Italian now. Listening to it is much easier than reading, but its all become very muddled as we decided to have a go at French after that and my languages have got all mixed up #-o)

This is where we will be moving to:

Although I can't read much of the blurb, it looks like a very special place. :Y: We haven't been there, though went to Pisa a few years ago and rented a lovely villa on the hillside overlooking the sea and it was utter bliss, the food, the wine, the people - oh I could go on! My OH travelled round Italy many years ago by train and loved it! I think having a complete change of life is an exciting thing to do, but can be a heart wrench, but it sounds as though you have had a place out there for a few years and I think that would make a massive difference to just moving to somewhere you have never lived before.

Well done you and we'd love to hear lots from you before you go and definitely when you have moved!

So, do you speak the lingo then Lisa?

Hello again Glen,

I would be really interested to know what kind of lighting you have used in "the cave" ?

There is a fluorescent light there atm, but I need to get more, I liked daylight bulbs before, will probably use one of them too and maybe add another fluorescent light.

That looks pretty good - I like the inset sink there. Are those standard kitchen units you've used? And do you have the rest of the Benchmate as well?

Like the use of what looks like a butcher's trolley for the ring stretcher & rolling mill; my cheap Ikea one has stayed put in the kitchen so far... Could get another one though. And the first aid kit on the wall - including an eyewash station, excellent!

nice workshop sparkle Designer

I have always worked in workshops with a hard floor, but I have opted for a carpet in mine. The major reason is that you can drop something on it and dont have to worry about it getting chipped or damaged, as is the case with stones. I have also always worked with a leather / leathette skin to catch fillings for the same reason, as it is softer and catches more fillings.

Here is my 'inside' workspace now that it didn't have to be turned back into a bedroom. It still has loads of my card making stuff in it, behind me on the wall are shelves full of it. Most of the jewellery making equipment is within arm's reach on the table and shelves left and right thank goodness.

OH has finished most of the 'outside' workspace and the benches are now up. (There will also be a greenhouse on the right, outside). I will be having this one side of the shed inside the door for lampworking and stained glass, eventually. The electrician came last week to put the electric in but we haven't decided what is going on the walls, if anything. He has built everything by eye as he has had no training and the walls aren't straight, the windows are recycled from and old green house and the slates don't line up perfectly ... but we love it and I think he has done a fantastic job :)

This is my basement workshop ( well a WIP ). All the work to tank and waterproof it is finished and I managed to paint it last week, so I am hoping that come spring time it will still be dry and cosy, with no damp patches. All I need now is some tools in it !! The needle files and rubber mallet that I picked up from the little hardware store down the road are looking a little lost and lonely !!

Hello
I don't think I'm allowed to post pictures yet as I'm new but you can see my workshop on my website. It is my garage coverted.

I bought carpet tiles so that when I drop hot silver on the floor we can swop them.

The rolling mill is bolted to an Ikea butchers block which is bolted to the wall.

All my tools are stored in plastic boxes. No rust problems with them.

OH put a ceiling up as it was open to the rafters. He also made the benches and put extra strip lighting. I love the whole set up, plenty of room to work and I teach workshops in there as well.

Take a peak at my workshops page on my website.

Murano Silver, I think that some of the best studios are those (maybe I´m just trying to reassure myself here!) which are complete chaos, but the owner could tell you with their eyes closed where the scissors are..or that HB lead pencil which fell on the ground two weeks ago and still hasn´t been picked up. Its more intimate and personal albeit chaotic that way haha!

01-05-2010, 07:15 PM
Thank you Nic, I love all these positive comments.

The belt sander looking thing, is a linisher, a most unjewellery like piece of equipment I know! I have arranged for it to rotate with the top of the belt coming toward me and I work on the bottom edge of the lower roller. It is brilliant for cleaning castings or putting a first stage finish on forged pieces. The flat top means I can get actual flat sides to pieces and by changing to finer belts I can get a pretty good initial finish. The main thing I like is that by holding and moving the piece against the cutting action of the belt it's a sort of sculpting process, I can make fairly immediate decisions about the shape. The main problem is the heat, fries the end of my fingers, getting tougher though.

Hope that's not too boring?

Hi Nic,

I've never tried grinding stoats or pmc for that matter so I'm really not sure if this process is suitable. There are very fine grit belts and it works well for fine, sterling, britannia, 9ct, copper, brass etc. It's also quite good for reshaping the ends of tools and suchlike. I can see that stone burrs could be very useful, presumably you mount them in a pendant handpiece? I can never get sufficiently good control over that, the rotation of the burr always causes the handpiece to wander where I didn't mean it to go.
To my eyes the belt speed is not too bad at all, it's a bit noisey. It is not like approaching a 6 inch buffing wheel with a length of heavy chain to polish, for instance.

Well, as I had my camera handy after loading some piccies from my weekend away in Beverley I thought I'd finally load some piccies of my workshop. The very empty work bench is in the initial temporary space I had in my back bedroom last summer just after moving everything back in after decorating. The other piccies are my proper workspace which I moved into at the beginning of the year in my box room. It's one of those rooms where the laptop, sewing machine and everything else lives too!!

HOWEVER after seeing all your fab areas I've decided that from tomorrow i'm going to steal some of the kitchen breakfast bar which currently hold all the crap achmmm sorry I mean school paperwork and homework in the processes of completion and stacks of printing paper, and drawings brought home from school, poems etc being laminated well you get the idea. My kids have taken to saying mum why do we have to tidy our rooms when yours is messy but mine is full of a ton of their stuff plus the contents of my Nan's flat from her recent move into a home. This may have worked, if it does then the first is my precious metal bench , the second is my polishing area , the third is my wax carving/ sculpting/ dumping ground and the last two are storage areas one using Ikea wine racks with really useful boxes and the other kids storage boxes also from Ikea. This room was bagged by me when we did the extension, it was to be the garage but ended up as a workshop complete with underfloor heating, just need to move thw outside shed and then I will be able to get rid of the DIY tools that are everywhere along with the wood, paint etc...

Thanks Tabby66, before this I managed to move my son (teen) from the second bedroom into the smaller back bedroom, we then extended and my son stayed in the little room the former workshop became a wardroom room for my wife and the former main bedroom became the guest bedroom, so it can be done and he is not too upset, really, I think! So good luck, I made the benches myself, much much cheaper than buying one, does help we have a good sawmill near.

Hi guys - wow there are some awesome workspaces here!

I am in the process of looking for a new bench / studio set up since my hammering bench is currently a cheap sawhorse from B&Q. I have other tables too, but am trying to get something more consistent. I was thinking of making the tim mccreight version - but can anyone tell me what it's like for noise dampening?

I do a LOT of hammering, and need a surface that deadens the sound, rather than accentuates it. My last attempt at a work surface was a piece of pine, which had a bit of an echo. I'm really trying to find something "neighbour friendly" that will deaden the noise I make or at least reduce it a little bit.

I work on a carpeted timber floor, and have been looking at installing a floating floor or some sort of acoustic dampening system as well. So I guess the question is three-fold -

a) what is your work surface and how does it stand up to hammering noise
b) what floor surface do you have
c) have to taken any particular measures to deaden the sound of your work and did it work effectively?

If I was looking for a new bench then you cannot beat Emir benches, If the prices are too high check out this seller of 2nd hand tools, they have some 4 ft square beech wood Emir benches that are built for heavy work, see;http://www.gandmtools.co.uk/cat_leaf.php?id=7586 , they are woodwork benches probably from a school workshop, but they could easily be adapted for silversmithing and even have a semi circle, jeweler's work area cut out along one edge.

The best I have tried for noise dampening, Emma, is an upended tree stump about 600mm tall, with the top hollowed out to retain a lage sand bag. Failing that, a blanket folded many times with a sand bag ontop. Regards,Dennis.

I wear earplugs while bashing out scrap from molten lumps ( I have no roller) and luckily we have no close neighbours. On the subject of sandbags, I wondered if I could make my own, using beach sand wrapped in multiple layers of plastic bags, then stitching that into a couple of sheets of softish leather. Has anybody tried this?

Urethane sheet is used industrially for sound-dampening in hammering processes... This one from Rio (https://www.riogrande.com/MemberArea/ProductPage.aspx?assetname=110331) is rather expensive for a tiny pad. Cooksons have some hard rubber blocks (http://www.cooksongold.com/Jewellery-Tools/Rubber-Bench-Block-prcode-999-7151) which are ok... but too small for most of my purposes ( I do use one under my lead block).

I must check out some of the UK urethane suppliers sometime (Eg Gelmec (http://www.gelmec.co.uk/GelmecSupersoftUrethaneSheets&Strips.html) ), they offer 0.5m sheets which sound ideal.

The improvised sand bags I have seen, threatened to give way due to the corners of metal blocks worming their way in. I think this is partly because the covers were not resistant enough, but also because the were underfilled.
My bought one is now sixteen years old and shows little sign of wear. It is covered with thick hide and glued at the edges. It has a double row of stitches and is very firmly stuffed. I think a saddler would do a good job. Dennis.

Thanks Dennis, well in that case I will just buy one and get it sent to my parents who are coming over to visit in May, they can do the donkey work of bringing that and my rolling mill (poor things) ha, still they will be pleased to be able to help out.

Thank you all - plenty of food for thought there!:Y:

Unfortunately Kwant my neighbours are very close (terraced house) The noise doesn't actually bother me, but I am sure it must be bothering them, and I want to reduce it before it becomes an "official" problem.

Dennis - that was my concern about using a sandbag with a steel block sitting in it. I would have thought that the corners of the block would split the leather - certainly over time anyway?

I did my calculations for a DIY section of floating floor, and it came out at about £50. So I am wondering if Joe's idea of rubber blocks would be better. I am thinking one under each leg of the table between the floor - as an extra barrier / noise stop. I already have one on the top underneath my benchblock. Any one have any opinion on why this wouldn't work before I take advantage of cookies freepost?

I searched for urethane sheet, but couldn't find a price for a big enough piece to use under the table as a deadening option apart from the states. I may look into this further.

I'm also off to Ikea today to check out a potential hammering station I've seen. As I said I already have a selection of tables I use for sawing, my drill etc - so I just need something solid enough for hammering on without it cracking. I'll post a picture when I'm done of my mis-matched space!:)

I sit my dapping block on some scrap vinyl floor covering, it does help deaden the noise.

These guys sell urethane rod (http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk/PolyurethaneRod/50mm/) which could be sliced into thick discs to sit between floor and bench... I'm sure it would help reduce transmission, but you need to stop the steel block ringing out really. This stuff is used for hi-fi applications (http://www.deadening.co.uk/silent-coat-mat-sample.html) and might help...

Another source might be from those selling stable matting - the traditional solid rubber stuff rather than the new ultra-light foamed ones. They frequently give away samples - too small to do a stable, but big enough for a bench foot. There's some sort of equestrian show in Wiltshire that's on over Easter I've heard something about (!) - there'll be a few suppliers there.

I built my workbench with a neighbour (Carpenter) and it is very traditional except white worktop. As I am left handed my torch is to the left and I find files pile up on the left.

Feels a bit like na na na-na nah I certainly don't mean it that way and I know I am lucky, made all of the benches myself, the wax bench was from a BQ oak work top that I got for £50, the silver bench is a beech slab that I bought from a saw mill, these both have 5" square legs that are bolted from below, the polishing bench was an Argos wood workers bench with an old worktop attached and the heat bench is an upturned office desk with the legs cut off but the modesty panel left in place, attached this to two drawer sets from Ikea, there is still a lot of clutter in the workshop because I don't have other storage facilities, this was meant to be the garage when we had the extension built, I managed to fit a door and window instead of a new garage door.

I can only drool and dream... LOL! My workspace is my lap! I sometimes use a laptray, maybe even a bead tray/board, and I've even been known to use a bead mat on occassion :D

Hello all Rocknrobbie here
Here is a couple pictures of my workbench, I don't like to look for tools so I try to keep everything organized as much as possible.

My humble little workspace (I don't have a work bench - no room for one lol) is in the kitchen. Luckily, the way our kitchen is it isn't actually being in the way of anything. The photos show the progression over just a few months. Before properly working with metals I would just sit in the living room with a tray on my lap, I still do this and watch telly when I'm working if I'm making something that doesn't take much thought =)

If I've posted the photos in the right order it should look like this:
1 Just a few months ago, a sad empty looking space, with a cat....and a fishtank.
2 Semi organised space, very basic tool setup
3 More tools and metals arrive, annoying fishtank using up valuble space ><
4 Workspace how it looks now. A wee bit more organised.
White shelves are part of an old bathroom cabinet. I store my cabouchons in the wooden box on those shelves. The old slow cooker is used as a pickle pot. I got rid of the tank, but made use of the light =)
5 The new badboy - named MillE by some friends (after WallE). I use jewellery display trees to hang up my silver wires and semi precious gemstones. I find that when I see my stones I get design ideas when I walk past past it.

My setup is far from perfect, but it works for me & I wouldn't change it for the world!
