Having soldered a “broach pin” with rotary safety onto a piece of silver I now find quite obviously the pin is annealed and totally bendy. How can I retemper this please?

What's the pin made of? I doubt you'll be able to harden it with heat (critical temperature of steel is ~724C, but varies according the alloy); you might be able to work harden it carefully by twisting it.

Yes, as Peter suggests, grasp the pin near the joint with narrow pliers and then with second pair of pliers, give the pin a quarter turn every four mm or so about its long axis. Done carefully, the rigidity will return, with not too much marking of the pin. Ear posts have to be done in the same way. Dennis.

Everything is silver, pin included!
Thanks for the “twisting”advice.

Surgical steel works much better for pins, I only use that now as recommended by Dennis a few years ago, it is far stronger.

The broach pin ensemble is original so “had” to be reused. I will attempt to do the twist....that’s showing my age!

Don't hurt your back. Dennis.

Ha ha. It’s already got Titanium 2 rods and 4 screws holding it together!
