As someone who is self learning, it&#8217;s a great test to see what level I&#8217;m at, kind of like a self exam. For these projects, I don&#8217;t normally have a plan, just a &#8220;see what happens if..&#8221; mindset. Although the end result was far from perfect, I&#8217;m still quite happy with it.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any old copper pipe lying around, here&#8217;s a great crafty idea to try.<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Gather up your copper, saw frame, files, soldering equipment and that all important cup of tea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4267\" alt=\"copper-pipe-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-1-207x300.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Cut the pipe into two lengths, one long and one short.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4268\" alt=\"copper-pipe-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-2-300x209.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Solder the bottom to a scrap peice of copper sheet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4269\" alt=\"copper-pipe-3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-3-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 4:Cut off the excess sheet that&#8217;s just been soldered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4270\" alt=\"copper-pipe-4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-4-222x300.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 5: \u00a0Then file it all flush. \u00a0Do the same for the shorter length.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4271\" alt=\"copper-pipe-5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-5-300x217.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 6: File in two matching dips (this will be for the hinge)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4272\" alt=\"copper-pipe-6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-6-300x220.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 7: \u00a0Cut, file then solder two tiny lengths of copper tube. \u00a0For the larger part of the copper pipe, only solder one peice of tiny copper tube in the middle of the dip. \u00a0When brought together, these &#8220;knuckles&#8221; should sit snugly together, one larger central one and two smaller ones each side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4273\" alt=\"copper-pipe-7\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-7-300x221.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 8: Cut another length of the copper pipe to go inside the main box. \u00a0You might need to reduce the width of this by making a cut down the length, remove a small section either by filing or with your saw, then solder closed again to ensure this bit will fit snugly inside the main box. \u00a0This will provide the box with extra stability.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4274\" alt=\"copper-pipe-8\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-8-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 9: \u00a0Draw and cut out heart shape leafs from copper sheet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4275\" alt=\"copper-pipe-9\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-9-300x204.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 10: File them into shape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4276\" alt=\"copper-pipe-10\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-10-300x260.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 11: Solder some copper wire onto the leafs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4277\" alt=\"copper-pipe-11\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-11-300x216.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 12: Then solder them all onto one length of 1.0mm copper wire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4278\" alt=\"copper-pipe-12\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-12-300x191.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 13: \u00a0Wrap the length of leaves around the base of the main box, solder into place. \u00a0Make adjustments to where you want the leaves to sit as you go. \u00a0Snip off the remaining length of leaves and keep for the lid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4279\" alt=\"copper-pipe-13\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/copper-pipe-13-300x207.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 14: \u00a0Hammer in a tiny length of copper wire for the hinge.
