It has been used in varying forms for thousands of years to embellish jewellery and decorative objects, and some of the earliest examples date from around 1400 BC. There are a number of different jewellery enamelling techniques, which all require specialist equipment and a good degree of skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s take a closer look at the art of enamelling, focusing on different types of hot and cold jewellery enamelling techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/enamelling-technique.jpg\" alt=\"Cloisonn\u00e9 enamelled Earrings\" class=\"wp-image-17966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/enamelling-technique.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/enamelling-technique-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitreous Enamelling <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cloisonn\u00e9 Enamel<\/strong> &#8211; Enamel is used to fill a series of metal enclosures, which are soldered to a metal surface. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Enamelling\/-Range=Leadfree_Enamel_Powders\/-Type=0\/-Alloy=0\/-Metal_Type=0\/-Brand=0\/-Colour=0\/&amp;prdsearch=y&amp;show=N\">Powdered enamel<\/a> is placed into the enclosures, fired and polished to create a smooth, level surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Champlev\u00e9 Enamel<\/strong> &#8211; Enamel is placed in channels and troughs, which are gouged out of a metal surface. Each channel is separated by a narrow ridge. Enamel is placed into each recess in powdered form, fired and then polished to achieve a flat surface, level with the metal ridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Basse-taille Enamel<\/strong> &#8211; Developed from the champlev\u00e9 technique, but the flat recesses are replaced with engraved and carved depressions depicting scenes and more complex designs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Enamelling\/-Range=0\/-Type=Transparent_Enamel_Colours\/-Alloy=0\/-Metal_Type=0\/-Brand=0\/-Colour=0\/&amp;prdsearch=y&amp;show=N\">Translucent enamel<\/a> is then used to flood the design, creating rich, tonal effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Email en ronde bosse (encrusted enamelling) <\/strong>&#8211; Enamel is used to coat 3-dimensional figures or objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Painted Enamel<\/strong> &#8211; As the name implies, wet enamel is used to coat a thin metal surface to provide a surface on which to apply subsequent layers to create a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plique-a\u2013jour Enamel (letting in daylight) <\/strong>&#8211; This is one of the most challenging forms of enamelling and involves the creation of a mini stained glass window effect. Metal enclosures are created and filled using a temporary backing plate, which is later removed, allowing light to shine through. It is a technique which can create some of the most beautiful results, but has an extremely high failure rate due to its complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not surprisingly, over the years, manufacturers have developed a range of alternative \u2018Enamelling\u2019 products which can go some way to achieving the look of traditional enamel, without many of the pitfalls.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/firing-enamel.jpg\" alt=\"Enamelled earrings on gauze \" class=\"wp-image-18085\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/firing-enamel.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/firing-enamel-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/firing-enamel-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cold vs hot jewellery enamelling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold enamels come in powder or liquid form and require little or no firing. <br><br>Powders are worked in a similar way to traditional hot enamels but only require a low heat to melt, which means they can be fired in a conventional oven rather than a kiln. The colours are very strong and don\u2019t change during heating. <br><br>Liquid cold enamels are usually made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Resins-and-Crafts\/-Range=Resins\/-Type=0\/-Brand=0\/-Colour=0\/-Size=0\/&amp;prdsearch=y\">epoxy resin<\/a> and comprise a coloured base and a separate hardener. When the colour and hardener are mixed together, form a solid layer. This type of enamel requires no heat to dry and will cure completely in approximately 24 hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care needs to be taken as some resins exude strong fumes, so it\u2019s advisable to use them in a well-ventilated area.
