{"id":3725,"date":"2013-04-29T07:28:32","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T07:28:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/?p=3725"},"modified":"2024-12-16T13:50:57","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T13:50:57","slug":"how-to-make-a-simple-double-gallery-setting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/learn\/how-to-make-a-simple-double-gallery-setting\/","title":{"rendered":"How to make a simple Double Gallery Setting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A &#8216;How To&#8217; guide by guest blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niziblian.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lydia Niziblian<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A lady came to me with an antique heart-shaped amethyst that had been cut by a relative who was an amateur faceter.\u00a0 It was very unevenly cut, but of great sentimental value.\u00a0 It needed a handmade setting, and I thought a double gallery setting would be perfect, as it would hold the deep stone, and make the most of its colour.\u00a0 Armed with some tips from the Cookson Gold forum, I was off!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Jewellers-Soldering-Hand-Torch-----Butane-Blow-Torch-prcode-999-955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Torch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/-Range=Soldering_Powder_%5E_Fluids\/-Size=0\/-Type=0\/-Brand=0\/&amp;prdsearch=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flux<\/a>, brush, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Precious-Metal-Clay\/Picklean-Safe-Pickling-Powder-150g-prcode-855-1060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pickle<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/category_select.jsp?category=Jewellery-Tools&amp;Range=Pliers%2C_Cutters_and_Shears&amp;Brand=0&amp;Type=Pliers&amp;Size=0&amp;subsearch=3&amp;show=N&amp;prdsearch=y&amp;pagenum=0&amp;orderby=numpicks&amp;numperpage=25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pliers<\/a>, bench stake, hammer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/category_select.jsp?category=Jewellery-Tools&amp;Range=Saw_Frames_^_Saw_Blades&amp;Brand=0&amp;Type=Saw_Frames&amp;Size=0&amp;subsearch=3&amp;show=N&amp;prdsearch=y&amp;pagenum=0&amp;orderby=numpicks&amp;numperpage=25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">piercing saw<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/category_select.jsp?category=Jewellery-Tools&amp;Range=Files&amp;Brand=0&amp;Type=Needle&amp;Size=0&amp;subsearch=3&amp;show=N&amp;prdsearch=y&amp;pagenum=0&amp;orderby=numpicks&amp;numperpage=25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">needle files<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/category_select.jsp?query=Emery+Paper+Grade+150+Grade+2&amp;queryFromSuggest=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emery paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/category_select.jsp?category=Wire&amp;Alloy=Silver_Wire&amp;Shape=Round&amp;Dimension=0&amp;Type=0&amp;show=N&amp;prdsearch=y&amp;pagenum=0&amp;orderby=numpicks&amp;numperpage=25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sterling silver wire<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Solders\/-Alloy=Silver_Solder\/-Type=0\/&amp;prdsearch=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">silver solder <\/a>of varying grades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Wire\/Sterling-Silver-Round-Wire-1.00mm-prcode-HSA-100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1.0mm sterling silver wire<\/a>, I formed the first shape. This fit just under the girdle of the stone.\u00a0 When the stone is placed on top of the shape, it should sit neatly, with no gaps apparent between the edge of the stone and the silver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When I was happy with the shape, I cut the wire. Then I double checked the seat of the stone\u00a0\u00a0 before soldering with hard solder. I then hammered it flat on my bench stake to make it as even as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3726\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/1-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now the smaller shaped heart needed to be made. I formed this for the lowermost point of the stone to sit in.\u00a0 If you sit the stone in the larger piece, make sure the smaller piece will seat the bottom of the stone, without the stone protruding through.\u00a0 As before, it was cut, soldered with hard solder, and hammered flat for as even a seat as\u00a0 possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3727\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I then made\u00a0 a cross with two lengths of wire.\u00a0 I left plenty of length, as these were going to form the prongs that held the stone in place.\u00a0 I soldered them at the cross point.\u00a0\u00a0 I then placed the smaller of the two hearts onto the cross.\u00a0 This was soldered into place using medium solder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3728\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/3-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using a piercing saw, I cut the cross away from the centre of the heart, and filed the edges smooth.\u00a0 Then it was time to place the second supporting heart.\u00a0 It was a little fiddly, but by angling the prong\u00a0 arms correctly, the heart sat neatly with even spacing below.\u00a0 I soldered it in place with medium solder.\u00a0 A little binding wire might be good insurance against any movement during soldering here!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3729\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/4-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once the soldering was complete, I double checked the seat of the stone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3730\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/5-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3731\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/6-300x261.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once I had had a look at the stone in place, I could mark and trim the prongs to a more workable length.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3732\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/7-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I then used easy solder and soldered the setting onto the ring shank I had made.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3733\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/8-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Again I tested the seat of the stone, before marking and trimming the prongs to my desired final length, and pickling the piece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3734\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/9-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a marker pen, I marked where the prongs needed to bend over the stone.\u00a0 With the stone out, I used a triangular needle file to carefully file a tiny notch at this point on each prong.\u00a0 Finally, the prong ends were shaped and filed smooth and the ring cleaned and polished thoroughly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3735\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/10-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"10\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the stone in position, and the ring held in a ring clamp, I carefully bent the prongs over.Moving each a little at a time ensures the stone stays tight and central throughout.\u00a0 You can see that despite the uneven cut of the stone&#8217;s girdle, it was seated firmly, and held securely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
