{"id":16263,"date":"2022-07-12T16:48:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-12T15:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/learn\/auto-draft\/"},"modified":"2024-12-16T15:08:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T15:08:05","slug":"creating-texture-using-polishing-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/blog\/learn\/creating-texture-using-polishing-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Create Texture Using Polishing Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways to add texture to your jewellery &#8211; burrs, files and waxes are examples of techniques that add deep and pronounced texture to once plain surfaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we are going to show you a few quick and easy ways to add texture using a range of polishing tools, including our favourite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Abrasive-Rubber-Block-Extra-Coarse,-Wine,-36-Grit,-Garryflex-prcode-999-AFO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garryflex.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To show examples of a few different textures we have cut out triangles to make into mix and match studs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark out the size of your triangles onto the metal using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Standard-Steel-Scriber-prcode-999-589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scribe.<\/a> Cut out using your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Grobet-Swiss-Made-3-Fixed---------Jewellers-Saw-Frame-prcode-999-73A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piercing saw<\/a>, sawing on the outside of the line to leave room for filing or sanding later. Also, remember to keep that blade lubricated! If you cut corners you will have to go back and fix it later, so it\u2019s better to get it right at this stage to avoid going back and starting all over again! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Wet-And-Dry-Paper-7-Piece-Multi----Grit-Pack,-Grades-240-1200-prcode-1VP-002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emery papers<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Wet-And-Dry-Paper-7-Piece-Multi----Grit-Pack,-Grades-240-1200-prcode-1VP-002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">150 grit to 1,200 grit. <\/a> At each stage ensure all your scratches have gone from the previous grit before moving onto the next. Here are just a few of the many different textures you can create\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No 1<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Abrasive-Rubber-Block-Extra-Coarse,-Wine,-36-Grit,-Garryflex-prcode-999-AFO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garryflex<\/a> \u2013 coarse <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Abrasive-Rubber-Block-Extra-Coarse,-Wine,-36-Grit,-Garryflex-prcode-999-AFO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garryflex<\/a> is effective, yet quick and easy to use. Simply add texture using any motion you like, linear, circles or crosshatch. Wear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Safety-Glasses-prcode-999-244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety goggles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Finger-Protection-Tape,-27m90ft---Per-Roll-X-Width-1.8cm-prcode-998-071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protect your fingers<\/a>. Hold small pieces in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Flat-Nose-Pliers-115mm,-Sprung-----Pliers-prcode-999-695\">pliers<\/a> to allow for a good grip and keep your fingers out of harms reach (You can also hold your piece in a ring clamp). Texture the entire surface with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Pendant-Frosting-Wheel,-Extra-Fine-0.20mm-On-A-2.35mm-Shank,-Yellow-prcode-999-CCN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frosting wheel<\/a> using slow backwards and forwards movements. Next, I have added some stripes using the coarse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Knife-Edge-Rubber-Wheel,-Black,----Coarse-prcode-977-070&amp;query=Knife%20edge%20rubber%20wheel&amp;channel=uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black knife edge rubber wheel<\/a>. Line up your triangles on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Soldering-Block-150-X-100-X-25mm-prcode-999-968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soldering block <\/a>and add a small amount of flux to the area where the post will be placed. You can measure and mark the point with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/Standard-Steel-Scriber-prcode-999-589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scribe<\/a> or by eye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heat the solder pallions and scoop them onto the posts and then bring the post over to the piece, heat the piece and solder on the post. (You can also sweat solder the solder to the earring first and then add the post if you prefer). We recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooksongold.com\/Jewellery-Tools\/3M-Radial-Abrasive-Disc-Pink-------Pack-of-6-prcode-997-5107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pink scotchbrite radial discs<\/a>, which will clean up nicely without damaging the clean-up you did prior to pickling. There is so many textures you can make using different tools, so have a play around and see what you create.
