Mother’s Day is nearly here (it falls on Sunday 11th March this year), and a quick browse of the internet brings forth a huge array of gift suggestions for mums young and not so young! Amongst the inevitable chocolates and flowers, personalised accessories are right up there as one of the most popular gifts for mum this year, which is not surprising seeing as it is also particularly on-trend at the moment.

Here at Cooksongold we have seen a great deal of interest in our new alpha-numeric stamping blanks (see below) which have personalisation right at the core, so I thought we should look at how to bring together some of these pieces with a view to creating that perfect Mother’s Day gift this year.

Bag charms are a great way to create a personalised gift that doesn’t shout too loudly if you catch my drift. Not everyone wants their family sentiments on display as jewellery, but most women will carry a bag of some description, so bag charms are a great option.

Albert swivel clasps are the ideal finding for bag charms. They are strong and secure and the swivel function means your decorative pieces are free to move with the bag, and won’t get caught or stuck facing the wrong way. You can choose from silver, bronze or even 9ct gold, or go for a larger size key ring fitting which is nickel plated.

Once you have the correct finding it’s time for the fun part and your imagination can kick in. By attaching a large jump ring, chain or wire you can attach initials, stamped name discs, charms, hearts, stones, beads or a combination of all of them. You can then enamel, stamp and hammer pieces to your heart’s content to add a little more interest.

Key rings offer the same options as bag charms, and can also make great personalised presents for Mother’s Day. The one pictured below was made for me years ago by my sister in law, and is a lovely example of something which can be made just using cold connections and a little imagination. It utilises copper sheet, wire, beads and a heart shaped split ring and I love the fact that it was made just for me. Purple beads have been chosen to decorate it (my favourite colour), and the names of my two daughters have been stamped onto the copper discs which make it super special.
