Gold filled jewellery wire is created by mechanically bonding a layer of gold to a layer of base metal – in many cases, brass. On the other hand, gold plating deposits a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another alloy (typically copper or silver) using chemical or electrochemical plating methods. Otherwise known as “rolled gold” or “gold bonded wire”, the outer gold layer of gold filled jewellery wire is required to be at least 1/20 of the overall metal content by weight.
