What are tap and die sets?
Tap and die sets enable you to cut both internal threads (with a tap) and external threads (with a die). These tools are essential for making secure fittings in jewellery, such as screw posts for earrings or threaded components in clasps and closures.
Created for miniature work, our fine-threaded sets accommodate sizes commonly needed in jewellery, typically ranging from 0.7 mm to 2.0 mm.
How to use tap and die sets
When using a tap and die set, there are a few things you’ll need to do. First, prep the metal. For rods, chamfer edges and apply cutting or tapping lubricant. For drilled holes, ensure alignment and cleanliness.
Then, begin threading gently by turning clockwise until it bites, then alternating between a quarter-turn back and a full turn forward to clear debris and avoid damage.
Finally, watch the alignment by keeping the tap straight, especially for deep threads. Use a pin vice for small sizes to prevent breakage.
