Project Pangolin.
I thought a pangolin was a musical instrument, until I saw that it was in fact an endangered species, the scaly anteater as we knew it: an animal that rolls up into an armoured ball when threatened.
Anyhow it looked like a good end of year challenge to make one in metal, either as a casting, or from an assembly of scales.
Ha, easier said than done. I couldn’t make scales stay in place reliably for soldering, nor could I carve them convincingly in wax. After umpteen experiments I had to make do with a textured sheet embossed by rolling it with nylon mesh and then with expanded aluminium.
It doesn’t have the authentic artichoke look, but hopefully is still recognisable. To jazz it up I added green eyes.
It is mounted on a piece of exotic hardwood and finished with Everbrite (see my revue in The Lounge).
Metal: 0.8mm fine silver sheet for embossing with aluminium mesh.
Size 65mmx 27mm. Dennis.

I love Pangolins !
I think you did a great job on the scales, very innovative.

I love him! My friend screenprinted a pangolin inside a box recently for our studio wall. There's something lovely about them!

Nice work, good job you did not pick a Echidna lots and lots of tiny spines

Awww, he's just gorgeous Dennis!!!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I wouldn't like one for a pet, though. For a start there's a shortage of ants here in London. Dennis.

I'm liking that Dennis, and your 'outside the box' approach to forming it. Great result!
