ring sizes

Hi everyone

I want to make some stock rings and was wondering what an average size would be? I love making rings but hoping for the right size finger to come along can take ages. I sold 1 last week that had been in my studio for nearly 2 years!

I'm told M is the most common size, but I rarely seem to be asked for them. I generally make all non-commissioned rings adjustable.

I hope lots of people will join in, but I have found that English size O is pretty universal, as it will fit a larger person’s index finger, or a smaller persons middle finger.

Be aware though, that a broader ring, or one which is flat inside, will feel tighter than a narrower ring or one which is rounded inside. So if you wish to make a variety of ring shanks, even some which are not round and cannot be measured on a ring stick, you can do as follows:

Choose a knuckle on one of your own fingers which fits your O ring sizer snugly, just pulling at the skin. Remember that feeling and make all your shanks regardless of shape or width do the same.

The only problem is that your own fingers will change size during the day, so you might be wise to re-check with your ring sizer and if necessary choose another knuckle each time you do this. But it does work. Dennis.

I make a lot of blanks and often go for O-P as they do exactly what Dennis suggests. Thumb rings I go for a Q as they can be sized up.

If using a flat broader ring, it may help to feel a little less tight if the inside edge is shamfered a little bit on both inside edges.

I was actually wondering the same thing this week! I've been making rings as a size O for stock, so glad I'm on the right track.

i had to make a ring with a 25mm onyx oval cab running up and down the finger, size N which is approximately 17.3mm so I bought a piece of 18mm dowel and ground the dowel down to 17.3mm on a bench grinder over a length of about 30-40mm this helps to make sure the size is right and that everything is square.

I do not normally make rings but of late I made five, and I googled "average womens ring size" lol big mistake... they only fit the little finger of my pet model Audrey (mind you her eyes lit up for two of them). Distance selling rings will not be an avenue I will wander, which is a shame coz I like making them. (my work is already Christmas cracker quality so will not be doing adjustables :0) )
