Onyx is a polycrystalline variety of the quartz family of minerals. It is technically a type of agate and can occur in solid black or banded black and white colours. Both types are referred to as onyx within the jewellery trade. The name onyx is taken from the Greek word “onyx” which means fingernail. According to legend this name comes from the story of Eros cutting the fingernails of Aphrodite with an arrow-head whilst she slept, and God turned the clippings into stone! Onyx is a celebratory gemstone, used in making jewellery gifts especially for Leos and also as an anniversary gift given for the seventh year of marriage. We currently stock onyx gemstones in round shapes ranging from 6mm to 12mm in size. Cabochon shapes ranging from of 4mm to15mm in size, and the ring of life is available in sizes 12mm, 15mm and 20mm which are all ideal for hanging charms!
