Moissanite is a man-made gemstone. The optical properties within it can exceed that of a diamond which means it appears to sparkle and shimmer more than a diamond. Measuring a huge 9.5 on the Moh’s scale, it is tougher than cubic zirconia and sapphire. It is because of these properties that moissanite has become a favoured diamond imitation among the jewellery trade.

First discovered in 1893 by a scientist studying meteors from a crater in Arizona, moissanite is an incredibly rare gemstone with unbelievable properties. Moving forward around 100 years, the commercial potential of using the gemstone in moissanite jewellery designs, and as a substitute for diamonds, had been realised. The scarcity of this new gemstone pushed scientists to research its breath-taking qualities in order to re-create it in a laboratory by the 1990’s. Moissanite is safe to use in an ultrasonic and steam cleaner. Moissanite stones can be safely cast in place, but are not suitable for firing in place with silver clay. We have a large collection of moissanite stones including cushion, round, oval and square shaped cuts, ranging in size from 1.3mm to 6.5mm. Each stone comes with its own certificate of authenticity from the laboratory at Charles & Covard. If you’re looking to make moissanite rings or necklaces and don’t know where to start you can call one of our jewellery-making experts on 0345 100 1122.
